I will be shooting 1080i, but I will need to cut on a G4 Dual 1Ghz, and I realize that is not a powerful enough system to cut 1080i with. Will the Canon downconvert on the fly while digitizing? Also, if it does this, will it maintain Timecode purity so I can uprez at a later date?

There is a downcovert from HDV to Dv on the Firewire port. Page 113 of the PDF manual. As for accuracy on redigitize I would be skeptical since I have found the HDV timecode to act flaky capturing clips into Final Cut 5.
