    Bill,
Do you see these drop outs on live video or only on playback? Have you tried replacing the dolly? I had an experience like this way back when I was seeing sparkles on live video when I used an Ikegami Tube camera on a dolly. The movement of the dolly was creating transient electrical spikes which the camera couldn’t deal with creating sparks in the picture. They looked like drop out but actually were not. Problems like this are often hard to duplicate but my guess is something is wrong with the wheel bearings on the dolly which is creating electrical static which the camera can’t handle. One test to try is take the camera off the dolly but walk with the dolly as it moves and see if you get the problem. If you can walk next to the dolly without the effect then maybe you can isolate the camera from the dolly while it is mounted with a rubber pad under the plate. You can also try grounding the the dolly with a grounding strap so it doesn’t build up static and grounding the camera to the dolly as well. The problem could also be in the shielding of the camera although in my experience problems like this are model specific and hard to rectify. HTH

Maybe the battery didn’t fail but the camera did? This sounds like a Panasonic Customer support question. It could be a blown fuse/circuit breaker or maybe there is a reset button. Good Luck

    Jason,
As Don pointed out. Canon doesn’t let you change settings on the XLH1 camera which involve the firewire protocol while it is connected. This has caused much confusion among users since they often hook up the cables before worrying about the settings. Canon wants you to set the XLH1 first and then connect it to the computer. As for getting the XLH1 to playback PAL over the firewire did you get the Pal modification Canon provides as an after sale modification. Assuming you did get the modification then you probably have to put it in the Pal mode before you connect the firewire. If you didn’t get the modification then it probably won’t work with Pal until you do. Good Luck hth

November 30, 2006 at 2:44 pm in reply to: Problem with Digitizing VHS

I had a problem with my Media 100 system and the S Video input which sounds similar. It was giving me bad video on the SVHS input. The levels were hot.Now that I think of it It may be incorrect termination in the breakout box. If that is the case then there is nothing you can do externally to correct it. I never did fix it as the Component and DV inputs worked perfectly.

It is entirely possible your XL-H1 is out of spec compared to the DSR-1500. If the Canon plays back itself and the DSR-1500 doesn’t then there is an indication that one is out of alignment with the other. It happens with DV cameras and they don’t have tracking knobs to adjust for this.

June 21, 2006 at 8:47 pm in reply to: Canon Console CCU application for multiple cameras

I just left the Canon Show in NY City and the person who was running the software said it was 1 computer per camera. I asked about using a firewire switcher or hub and she said that i was a feature request by people but not a reality. I am not sure if this is the last word but it was the one I got today

  • Unfortunately the Canon HDSDI does not include either audio or TC. You have to access these seperately. As for the Console question I suggest you ask Canon directly. I haven’t tried it out since I run stuff on a Mac.

June 8, 2006 at 7:56 pm in reply to: XD Cam and 2/3 lens adaptor for F330

Yes you can use your lens but you will have to evaluate its optical problems very carefully. CA and focus issues will show up at dffierent F Stops and focal lengths which might kill the shot. There is also the conversion factor of 1.37 or so for angle of view. Ie 8 MM for the wide becomes 8×1.37=10.96. If you put your Wide angle adpater onthe front of it it will go bakc to being almost as wide as the standard lens. The quality of the lens you currently own will determine its useability. I would put your old lens on a demo unit and see if it works well in low light. Be very critical. In the long run you might ant to buy a medium priced 2/3 Inch HD Lens and the adapter since eventutally the 2/3 inch XDCAM HD will come down the pike. Sorry it isn’t a straightforward ye or no.

June 7, 2006 at 11:14 pm in reply to: XL HI Horizontal Resolution in SD?

    David,
I traded in my DSR-570 and bought an XLH1 because I wanted another camera which could do 24F and 30F. I am sure the DSR-570 was sharper in NTSC and had better depth of field becasue of the 2/3 inch chips. The Canon doesn’t look bad it just looks more like a 1/3 inch chip camera compared to the 2/3 inch chip cameras. If you shoot in HDV however the extra resolution you record is very significant which the NTSC camera couldn’t.

June 5, 2006 at 8:05 pm in reply to: 2/3″ XDCAMHD

Yes it is tricky to figure out what to do at this point. I bought an XLH1 to serve my Low Def and HDV level clients. It is a relatively low cost solution to getting into HD. We have been renting HDCAM and Varicam as needed although I would have bought an XDCAM HD if they had come out with 2/3 inch chips on this version. I don’t think you can lose too much money on the low end cameras so I would dip my toe in there and wait for the middle and high end to resolve itself unless you have a job which will pay for the cameras which are out now. The next investment I am making is a HD monitor. It is more likely going to pay for itself than some of the more expensive cameras out there.
