  • Hi Joe, what do you suggest I should be looking out for? The processes all look pretty normal and none of them are taking any CPU time to speak of. If it were a background process causing trouble you would expect the CPU to be flat out handling that process but when I say AE is only using 30-60% I mean that is the reported usage in task manager for all processes, not just AE.

Thanks Dave, I was trying to avoid pre comping as I would end up with quite a few of them but you got my brain ticking and the way I have things set up already I’m pretty sure I will be able to get away with putting most of them in the one pre comp.

    Cheers,

Sorry, I misread the original post. My problem is slightly different. Having shot on DVCPRO HD and supervised the shoot, under the circumstances the footage couldn’t be much better. The key is fine, that is until I apply Colour Finesse at which point the grey parts of the matte turn dark in the key. This is before I have even tweaked any of the settings in CF. Other colour correction filters cause no problems and CF doesn’t either if it is on an adjustment layer, but using an adjustment layer means that all the layers are affected.

  • Thanks for the reply, Jon. Admittedly I am not running a raid system. I have separate source, destination, temp/cache and system drives but I don’t think that is the bottle neck since the HDD activity is also much less than I would expect. True, allot of the comps I work with call on many 3D layers and may be bottlenecked by disk speed, but even very simple one or two layer comps rendering to low data rate formats such as DV are not fully utilising available system resources.

On further investigation, this may not be an AE specific issue. I see the same results in system monitor when exporting from Red Cine and even when I play a 180P H.264 trailer in Quicktime it stutters despite low CPU and RAM usage.

    Any further suggestions much appreciated.

    Regards,

    Daniel

    Any suggestions for Primatte?

I have the same issue. When I apply Colour Finesse to a keyed layer, the translucent parts of the matte turn dark, producing a dark halo around hair etc. On an adjustment layer above? No problem, but then it affects the background of course.

    Cheers,

    Daniel

  • Still no love. I did file a bug report. Fingers crossed Adobe fixes this, since it is a major upset to my workflow (alot of compositing heavy work and absolutely everything is finished in AE!) I reinstalled AE in the hope that this problem had occured in an update to the Premiere import plug in. Possibly a change to the .pproj EDL syntax in Premiere that hasn’t been communicated to the AE dev. team. That’s my guess.

I really hope someone is listening at Adobe.

Trapcode Echospace (redgiantsoftware.com) would probably do exactly what you want and takes care of all the parenting and expressions for you.

Thanks for the replies. It turns out the error was completely human. I was not previewing a light which was hidden in another one of the precomps because I was in draft 3D mode.

    Thanks anyway.

Well, It seems pretty definite that Quicktime capture is not possible in windows, but Focus Enhancements, the company that manufactures FireStore has an application for lossless conversion between DV codecs and formats. Many times faster than encoding a DV file from Quicktime or any NLE too.

    Thanks for the replies,

  • Thanks a heap. I knew it had to be something simple. I was using the front custom view instead of active camera.

    Thanks,

    Daniel
