It isn’t hands-on training, but there are video tutorials that can get you started at least. I’ve used Lynda in the past.

Right click on the DJ layer and ensure that it is not a guide layer (these do not render). Also, in the Output Module, check that the Channels in Video Output are set to RGB + Alpha.

Not sure what is going on there but a work around might be to nest the sequence, render, and if it plays back correctly, locate the render file and use that as your exported file. Also, just as a long shot, clear your renders using the Render Manager and try again.

It is a long shot but is the vector inside a precomposed layer?

Try placing the footage above your travel matte clip in FCP. Also, from my understanding, DV can’t store an alpha channel so you may want to try it as a luma travel matte instead of an alpha travel matte in FCP

Also try clearing the cache and a system reboot. It has worked for me in the past

Is it DV25 footage? I know that when I play DV25 footage through Quicktime it often looks pixelated, though looks perfect in Final Cut.

  • Do you have multiprocessing enabled? Sometimes I have had delays at the end of a render with this enabled. For short renders this bothers me but for renders lasting over an hour or something, hey, what’s another minute or two. I hear the beep after the delay but I thought I’d mention it anyway.

Perhaps a definition of what you mean by crummy and bad will help get you to a solution.

Are you using Export -> Quicktime Movie, … or Export -> Using Quicktime Conversion?

If you are using the Quicktime conversion option you may need to take a look at your codec and its settings.

What is the duration and dimensions of your clip, and what is the exported file size? From this we may be able to tell if it is heavily compressed through your selected options and that is why your export is looking bad.
