    Apologies for the late response

Thanks all for your suggestions. If its of any interest, I was also looking at the following new product from BlackMagic. It might be a possible solution for me but I will need to look a bit more into it.

    Again Many Thanks:

    Hello

How fun…from a maybe to an absolute no!

Personally, I would tend to agree more with Bill. However, it seems like you can possibly get away with it IF you (and your client) have a very clear idea of what is being delivered. I met some guys recently, who are considered very experienced, and they told me that when they do on-site editing its often with just a laptop and no video monitor. They do stat that the setup is far from ideal.

I wonder if the mentality behind someone not using a proper monitor is also to do with the vast amount of consumer editing products out there and the sale pitches telling everyone how easy it all is. . Someone uses Imove and the mental leap from that to something more professional is sometimes hard to justify. Why do I need that when I was fine with this? No realizing how circumstances have changed.

Is the ability to present a justification for such things in a clear and rational manor one of the characteristics that separates a pro from an amateur?

Hmm…if it makes you feel any better I do monitor with broadcast quality equipment.

Sounded a bit elitist there, but then I do like to be a bit of an elitist from time to time.

    Many Thanks

  • Hello

I’m very sorry for the delay in responding to your good suggestions. After spending quite a lot of time reviewing all the options the result has been only a bit of confusion.

I’m going to take a brake before preceding any further.

    Again – Many Thanks

August 22, 2008 at 5:48 pm in reply to: Archive XDcam on BlueRay workflow

    Hello

I can’t say that I have used this workflow for backup and archiving. But I though I would suggest something else for your consideration.

I use Iomega REV disks for archiving media.
    Advantages:
    Faster write times than burning.
Larger capacity, up to 120GB. Capable of backing up your PHU-60K hard drive in one go.
    Very reliable and durable.
    Cons:
Media and drives are a bit pricey
Looks like you will need to buy two drives – one for the road and one for the studio. Maybe…

However, after a long day of travel and shooting, the last thing I would want to do is stay up late each nigh burning backup disks. It all sounds too painfully slow to me.

Also this little utility might be of interest to you, even if you stick with burning to blue ray.

    Hope it helps.

  • Hello

Don’t know if this helps but here it goes.

As far as I know the EX1 outputs all its supported/recordable progressive and interlaced signals via the HD-SDI. The problem is your card. The decklink card doesn’t support 1080 progressive capture. It does support a 1080 24Psf format but you camera doesn’t (I think).
The only progressive format your card does support is the 72050p, which is why you see it.

    https://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/hd/techspecs/

In your final cut pro settings you might see lots of 24p setups for blackmagic. But these setup are, from what I can tell, for editing only. Playback and output for these setup are done via a pulldown.

So it seems that you are stuck with 720 50p signal for now. Don’t know if that will help you in getting your workflow done.
