This thread underscores the problem. I’ve heard stories of guys traveling now the same way we have for years. The batteries go in the case with the charger and nothing so far. I’ve also heard of a crew having to discard a brand new idx np because the TSA agent didn’t know the rules. I myself have gone back to
Anton Bauer for travel. It sux because of the weight but like all of us I cannot afford to get to the shoot and have the batteries still in Miami. And it is all rumor as no one from TSA or NTSB has made any public statements about this. Have 5 camera guys read the guidelines and you will get 5 differing opinions on them. One person told me that a person from TSA said that they were not in the business of confiscating batteries. But as we have learned the rules change from airport to airport and sometimes its different concourse to concourse. I was also talking to the guys at Prosource and they had heard that the restrictions were going to be tightened again in October but had no info as to what that would be. To be safe the only lithium batteries we carry right now are the two NPs for the audio bag.Dale West

I believe that even B&W footage needs to have color burst on it.
Perhaps the Error message comes from the machine seeing burst and then losing it. I’m not an engineer but it’s something I’d check on.Dale West

You should be able to carry them all as they are under the 8 gram limit. Space in your travel bag will be your big issue. I suggest we all get used to carrying a copy of the rules when we travel. But you know how it goes. Every security line has a different set of rules or at least a different understanding of the rules. It is going to make travel much more difficult since it is often hard to find someone in charge that knows what going on. The thought of having to buy new Nicads and chargers is distressing. I’m in a very similar boat. I have 4 of the Comer 160s for each of my 2 packages. I figure that I can carry 2 and my sound tech can carry 2 but now what do I do with the stuff I already carry on? I can’t bring myself to ship the camera and I have my briefcase stuffed full.Perhaps with the help of the NTSB and TSA someone will come up with an approved shipping case. Any entrepreneurs out there?
Hoping for a great 08 for all

Inflight uses a sound practice. I am going to start doing that as well. However after heading the new rule a couple of times and spending a few minutes on the last 2 paragraphs, It seems to me that it says we can carry on 2 of the larger batteries( I use 4-160 watt hour bricks) as they are more than 8 grams but still under 25 grams. Our plan is to split up the batteries 2 for me and 2 for my soundman. Before I abandon all hope and order 4 new Hytron 140s and a new charger I was wondering if others read the rule the same way.

If the camera is available try rewinding there. Opening the lid
should be a last resort since there is always a chance of damaging the tape. If you have to go that route I suggest you
try it on either a blank or old tape that you wont have to worry about damaging.. -
Kim,
Not to sound like a hump but I’ve found the Operating Instructions to be a valuable tool. I spent hours flipping through the menus and at last I downloaded the manual and the clouds parted and the birds sang and I was able to get where I needed to be without much trouble. I carry them in my van as well as keep one near my rack in the shop. The 1400 p/e manual is only 68 pages and it is so handy to have. Try this link. http://www.retrevo.com/s/Panasonic-AJ-HD1400Pbest of luck

A quick way to check that is to see if the lines appear at
consistent intervals. Any radar would sweep at given rates and you could tell from the time between problems. But I have never flown in a civilian chopper with radar. Still think the problem could be a loose board. Or this thought just came to me…how were you powering the camera? Were you using power from the ship? That might also be something to check. And the big one..do you still have the problem back on mother earth? -
I have shot with the nose mount on several occasions and not had any problem. Perhaps it is a loose board or bad solder point on a board. Try putting the camera on a tripod then LIGHTLY tapping the sides of the camera. See if you can get it to fail there. If you saw this problem in the Tyler VF then bringing a 1200 or 1400 into the ship probably wont be any different as you would end up using the same video line to feed the recorder and it sounds like this is happening way before the hd sdi out.
Good luckDale West

Just had the same error on a project I was doing. Seems that it was a head clog on mine. I cleaned the deck and it went away. Sounds like it might have been on the camera with your project. It might be a tape path problem on the camera or the deck. Give both a good cleaning and try again. I tend NOT to use a cleaning tape unless there is no other alternative. You can pick up a cleaning kit at radio shack. Remember that the heads are fragile so clean with care.
