https://www.uscib.org/index.asp?documentID=718I’ve done carnets overnight but the cost goes up.
as stated by the others it might be best to pile on with
the relief group if you can but, to hedge all of your bets it is also a good idea to have the name of a good customs broker in
your back pocket. The more bases covered the less likely it is that your gear will spend time in customs jail. I’ve been there and it is not a good feeling to walk out and leave your stuff in a closet and wonder if it will be there tomorrow. -
Yeah we always have hard wired A to B to C etc and it has worked fine
with A rolling first and stopping last. The tri level sync is another matter. Does anyone know of an affordable sync generator? Haven’t spent my allowance this month.

Yeah, Ive been reading about it for a while a its going to be a very useful tool when P2 is in full swing especially with local/network news types. But I’m looking for that something something that replaces the
gvd-900 recorder. Most of the small pov types are HDV and I’m looking for something that fits in that Varicam/HDX-900/HVX200 hole. I am prepping a nature show with snakes and other toothy critters and dont want to have all that “stuff” in the glades and the woods. I already own a varicam and a 200 so thought that a small P2 recorder would be wonderful. I’ve seen pix of guys with a backpack and an iconix and I’ve got 25-30 years on those guys and want my backpack to be sooooo much smaller.best

John,
It’s sometimes a full time job just finding out what they want isn’t it? I was recently on a job for a network sports show. When I asked what frame rate they wanted the producer said ” I don’t know….just do it so its like beta sp. All this stuff gives me a head ache.” The thing is there were a bunch of crews and for a while there were a ton of tapes at 3 different frame rates. The editors were ready to hang themselves. In the end the DPs got together and figured out the needs.I also had a very long discussion with on PM for a “large cable show” that kept insisting that we had to make sure that we shot 16:9 and not 4:3. I kept telling her that HD is by nature 16:9 but she insisted that they got some footage back in 4:3 and she was under orders from the EP to make sure that it didn’t happen again. It does get confusing and I’m sure that people that are not in the field every day tend to have their eyes glaze over with all the 720p/1080i/HDV/DVCProHD/24p/23.9/long GOP/protect 4:3 etc…etc. talk. I find that it takes a very careful conversation with some PMs to make sure that we are on the same page. Perhaps the folks at HD Expo should put together a producer/production manager bootcamp.

sounds like something to check into if it happens again. On a shoot yesterday the other guy is having the same problem and I’ll let him know about this. but the original post still lurks……the only way owner/operators are going to get Panasonic to change their policy on parts and availability is to talk about it in a place where a lot of people can participate. The cow is one of those places. I’m not saying we should pile on but concerns need to be addressed. Call Roger Macie and ask him about the difficulty he has when he needs Panasonic parts. I’m told that Panasonic has sold more 900s than both models of the VariCam combined, and I’m sure that there is a 900 in my future. But if we cannot be assured that we cannot get our units repaired then what is alternative? I was hoping that we might hear from Steve and Jeff on this. I’m sure they have heard this before and I’m sure they have relayed it up the chain but what is it going to take to get some response? Panasonic has some good stuff in the field its just too bad that there is more and more of it in the shop.

Seems that the Macie Video guys were able to do just that. Suddenly there is a part available. Came out of the Panasonic service stash I guess. I’m just a single camera owner and don’t have much pull with Steve and Jeff but I know that they read the forum and perhaps I’ll hear from them along the way. It is a shame that Big Footing is even needed but in the end its all about getting the camera fixed and back in service.
On another note anyone want to talk about the LH-900 and the cable from the control panel to the monitor…I’m into that for just under 1000 for two repairs. Don’t think that will win any design awards.
OK enough. I still like the whole line and hope that they are able to overcome issues that exist.

Thats why I love this forum….My editor and I talked about this for 15 minutes and were so focused on one process we totally missed the most obvious answer. I’m on this page at least two times a day. I’ve had my VariCam for a bit over two years and there is always something to learn.
Happy New Year to alldw

Bob,
The good news is it can be done. The bad news is not to the VariCam. The VariCam has no video in. There a couple of options:
The first a probably the easiest is to digitize to FCP or Avid then output back to tape. The down side here is that the original time code is going to be lost. Not a huge deal if this is for archival purposes but a drag none the less. A second option is to get your hands on panasonic’s AJ-HPM100. It is a mobile player recorder. This way you can play out of the 100 to a 1200a or 1400. I fully support getting the stuff onto tape for archiving. How many times have I needed a shot that was on a tape sitting on my library shelf?! I really believe that too much material that won’t “make the show” is going to get dusted and never seen again. There may be folks out there that have other ideas and I’d love to hear them as well.
Good luckdw

Are you going to use fire wire drives and what version FCP are you running?
