December 19, 2008 at 1:23 pm in reply to: Filming under 32 Degrees F, how do I do it safely?

A couple things to try as well.
I have used my rain cover with hand warmers between the
cover and the camera. I bought a bunch of them at REI. just rip open
the bag and when they come in contact with air they begin making heat.
Not hot but very warm. Covering the camera alone can also help as the
camera will generate its own heat and the cover will help keep it in. I’ve found
that in real cold that the camera will sometimes stop making color or make a very unique
color. In Alaska one winter I took the polar coat off my varicam and left the power off while I was setting up a shot. It was about -15 degrees. When I powered back up to shoot the first 2 minutes were the most vivid green. Once we got back up to temp the color returned to normal but its best to keep your camera covered and on while outside. Your battery life may also be shortened by the cold. I keep my small batteries in a parka pocked again with hand warmers. You also have to be careful about going from cold outside to warm inside and back out. Just like going from cold AC to humid outside only in reverse. Anton Bauer also makes battery covers for their pro pack style batteries and you can again put hand warmers in them.
    Good shooting

    John,
Valid solution. I came at it form a little different angle but I like your solution.
I think it underscores the need to get out of the box we have had the luxury of being in.
You are right about turning down work in this time. It has made me itch for a couple of days
now. Wish I’d thought of it before. Thanks

The 1200a deck does not support HDV playback
here is a link for the operation manual where you can
    find the playback specs.

Was hoping there was a machine to machine process. We would love to just move it from the camera to the PDW-1500 and still maintain clips etc.
Can that be done? Just trying to get the stuff in and out as it is for a new segment that is planned for later in the day. We figure they are bring about 4+ hours of material on the cards. If we have to ingest it we should be ready for that when they get here. We (my editor) are getting the suite tuned up for that. You know how it goes. Its never needed until its needed then “OH Boy”.

    John,
Went back and re-read the stuff on the 3700 and I stand corrected. Apparently I ass-u-med it was 60i. How the camera builders come up with some of this stuff boggles my mind. At NAB I had dinner with one of Panasonic’s VPs. Really hit him hard on the issues that owner operators who mostly hand over footage had with the P2 workflow. His words were we hear you but his solutions for dealing with it told me he wasn’t hearing. It always seems to come to adding a person to deal with transfer. Thats not the world I live and work in. My clients want more for less. Can’t recall the last time I got a raise.

Was shown at NAB. Going to be 2 VariCams. The 2700 is in very general terms the VariCam on P2. 1-60 fps, flip out monitor, avc intra, 10 bit and a bunch of other stuff. 720 progressive.

The 3700 is 1080 1-30 frames p and 60i. 422 10 bit as well as dual link 444 and a host of other features. Dont quite have a grasp on why the 1080 camera does not do all of the frame rates but I assume the explanation would make my eyes galze over anyway. Both have 5 P2 slots.

The link Denise gave was very interesting. There is also a piece on the 3000 as well. Both pieces actually helped me understand the huge difference between 8 bit and 10 bit.

P2 still makes me itch a little but so did betacam when it first came out in 80-81. Time marches on as that grey headed stranger in the mirror tells me every morning.

Came across this article while poking around in Panasonic’s HD page. https://www2.panasonic.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/prModelDetail?storeId=11301&catalogId=13251&itemId=239663&modelNo=Content04082008055319789&surfModel=Content04082008055319789

    Might provide some interesting reading.

April 9, 2008 at 3:43 pm in reply to: Varicam timecode problem?

I’ve done this with mp3s with two or three different transcription companies and there were no problems. So like you I’m at a loss. I just emailed the files to them and it was the same result as if on cassette. If you want to contact me off list I can let you know who we used perhaps they can be of more help.

April 9, 2008 at 11:23 am in reply to: Varicam timecode problem?

I recently did a show and all of the original interview tapes had transcription mp3s done in a similar way. We used an Ederol and Peter Engh timecode box and had no problems. The one thing that you might want to check is were the cameras also genlocked with tri-level sync? In earlier days when we were doing 2 or 3 camera VariCam shoots we were not genlocking the cameras and we would occasionally get a servo error warning on one or both of the downstream cameras. Once we started using the tri-level sync box that stopped. I was never able to see what the result of the error was but that might be one of the effects. I also just got my camera back from Macie Video where they repaired the time code out. One small resistor on the board was burned causing a total black out of TC signal. But these two issues are not related (as far as I know). It might be a good idea to check the camera that you got your signal from though.
