So here’s what I’ve worked out, I can make some nice graphics for the names themselves and still use the BCC Extruded Splines for the lines. I’ve got a couple of other ideas I want to try out.

Yep, that’s it exactly. You probably found the one video that I didn’t look at ???? I searched for about an hour to find an example. What I have found is that BCC has an Extruded Spline plugin that might do what I want, just not as fancy. I can make a single straight spline, anchor one end at my text, and keyframe the other to match the movement of my subject. As I tweak the setting I get closer to what I want. I’ll post a test render here when I get it figured out. FYI, I still use Vegas 12, haven’t really had the need to upgrade.

Thanks Thomas,
That was a great explanation, looking forward to the BTS video soon. So is each scene a single long exposure on the Nikon, then the technique you describe to “reveal” the light traces? Everything looks seamless, well done.

I had asked the same question directly in his video comments. I don’t think he wants to reveal his “secret” just yet. He’s inviting guesses for now.

[Graham Bernard] ” [László Kovács] “But what the OP is asking, is that kind of motion trail those lights draw.”
How do you know this? I read this:
[Dale Estes] “This is pretty slick, and if it was a still image I could figure out how to do it.”
That didn’t indicate “Motion”?”
Yes, that is what I was trying to say. The LED part was easy enough, I was wondering about the light trails part of it. I’ve been a photographer for 30 some years and creating this effect in a still image is fairly easy.
I’m still relatively new to video and adding the motion part to the scene is what has me baffled. I’m sure there’s quite a bit of compositing going on, but how is he saving the light trails in the first place. My initial thoughts were about the same as Laszlo’s, lots of tracks composited together. The separate frames idea sounds interesting also, but a huge amount of work. I didn’t know about the motion blur, I’ll have to look at that. Some interesting ideas.

Looks interesting. and you’re right, it’d be nice to get away from the subscription thing. How’s the workflow? Is it similar to Photoshop or was there a larger learning curve?

I’m not in front of Vegas at the moment, but for 1) and 2), couldn’t you just highlight the first three letters, make them red, then highlight the last letter and make it green. I seem to remember being able to do this, although I’m old and make a lot of stuff up 😉

I’d like to see something like this also, kind of like on the NASCAR races where they have the drivers name in a box that’s not moving and then a pointer going to the car that tracks the car.

I’m using a Canon XH-A1 and record on an earlier version of this. I can then hook up the recorder to my computer and just download the files to my hard drive. I can then open up Vegas and bring them in with no problems. It records HDV in .mt2 format.

Thanks for the replies. Here’s what I’ve started doing. Copied the two tracks from the lower third .veg project to the main project. Placed them in the top two tracks. Copied the sliding black bar where I needed, all referencing the original one, then copied the text event several times over the lower third bar, making new copies each time and then changing the text. This seems to work the best and is the simplest. Thanks for everyone’s help and suggestions.
