Photoshop competitor is coming to Windows!
For those of you who detest subscription models like I do and refuse to pay Adobe random money to use Photoshop every month or else it stops working… there is now a significant competitor that has come to the rescue.
Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer are Photoshop and Illustrator competitors respectively that, until now, were only available on the Mac. Affinity started their advertising campaign by declaring that they will never “rent” their software. You own it forever. They were clearly talking to the Adobe haters and I own both Affinity Photo and Affinity Designer for the Mac ($49 USD each) and they are very much high quality competition for Adobe. I’ve stopped using Adobe CS6 completely now and thanks to Affinity, my workflow is “Adobe free”.
Well… Affinity is bringing their products to Windows. Anyone who wants a Photoshop equivalent for $49 USD (assuming they keep the same pricing as the Mac version) should sign up for the beta of Affinity Photo for Windows:

I have no affiliation with this company. I just own, and use, and love their products. I feel it’s wrong that Adobe is abusing their power position in the market by forcing customers into a financial model that benefits only Adobe and I applaud companies that stand up to the big guys and give us little guys a chance to control our own business budgets.

Looks interesting. and you’re right, it’d be nice to get away from the subscription thing. How’s the workflow? Is it similar to Photoshop or was there a larger learning curve?

It was very easy to pick up. It’s different but in a good way. Very easy to use yet very powerful. You still have layers and masks and all the stuff you expect.

How does it compare to Corel X8 PaintShopPro, which is my favourite Graphics Editor and has been for 15 years. Retailing around £45.

While I like PaintShop Pro and used it for many years, it was never a replacement for the power of Photoshop. Affinity Photo is a replacement for Photoshop. Much more in depth than PaintShop Pro. You may never need these deeper features and PaintShop Pro may be all you ever need. But Affinity Photo is competing head-to-head with Photoshop for it’s user base.

No. Unlike Windows where Microsoft believes that “one size fits all”, Apple understands that the interactions with a tablet are very different than the interactions with a desktop so there are different operating systems for the two. Macs run OS X and iPads run iOS. What you want is something like PIXELMATOR for iOS. Now the best thing about this is that it’s compatible with Pixelmator for Mac but you don’t own a Mac. (of course that is easily fixed by buying a Mac… lol) but Pixelmator for iOS is a really nice full-featured graphics app for the iPad. Before Affinity Photo came out, Pixelmator was my Photoshop substitute. It’s another great program for the Mac and iOS.

just wanna know, Can it open / create the PSD (photoshop)
file format efficiently for you in a tough real world workflow?
Cause this is the most common format comes in from clients from all walks of

Yes it can. It wouldn’t be much of a replacement if it couldn’t read and write PSD files. 😉 I’ve opened some pretty complex PSD files with it like 3D Box Shots with lots of layers grouped within layers and it actually opens them faster than Photoshop does. It also writes PSD files.
This app is deigned to compete with Photoshop so it’s very good at reading and writing the PSD format.
