I’d find out what they use exactly. I’m not positive but final cut comes with codecs to play certain quicktimes. So if they don’t have fcp then the codecs may not be on their machine to even view the qt. If they know how to work with the native p2 structure and are using avid or adobe then it’s probably better to send the native p2. Someone else with a bit more knowledge should confirm or oppose as I’m pretty new to this workflow.

I was speaking to my friend Jeremy Wallace at NASCAR. He says it’s really interesting software and looks forward to working with it. We both used to work at NBC and he thought I knew about the software through them. Matt Stamos gave me a tour of the software already. He probably spent close to an hour showing me around. I read somewhere that the stand alone software isn’t configured to work with MFX yet. You would have to get the server edition. Is that true?

Can you expand on your CatDV and FCP workflow. I want to use it with FCP too. I edit a lot of P2 projects and would like to use CatDv with the MXF and XML files. Unfortunately I just found out MXF isn’t available on the stand alone software, but I’m still curious as to how you are doing things.
I currently use P2 log pro and don’t like the fact that it has to transcode to a quicktime. I do like how it maps metadata to FCP as I’m usually only using the user clip name I’ve assigned it in the field to edit with.

Thanks Kevin. Our budget won’t allow thorough logging, as I would like, to fully utilize the CatDV software. What I’m looking at is using it more as an archive utility after the project is complete (in which it the demo appears to serve me well).
My workflow will be something like this:
have a dit/logger in the field manage the p2 offload to drives and use P2 viewer to add additional metadata with a pc. After the shoot day, one hard drive copy goes to the edit suite. The other stays with the producer/writer/etc.. to develop the script. The script may already be completed by the time the editor receives the drive thus making additional logging or metadata entry unnecessary.
This is where I’m still a little foggy on how to proceed with CatDV and the MXF calibrated software for a FCP edit workflow. I would just take the MXF file into FCP right from the MXF software, so why would I need the CatDV to do this. Unless it’s some plugin that would enable me to do it from within the CatDV.
What I think I’m trying to say is, I wish there was a video demo I could watch regarding the workflow between FCP and CatDV (if indeed people are using it that way to edit).
Like I said, right now I’m looking at it for cataloging my projects. But the more I read the more I think I’m missing out on a faster or better editing workflow too.
btw, can I use any MXF software in conjunction with the CatDV? Or does it have to be Calibrated or MXF4mac?

Can you expand on why you didn’t like the performance of the Pictron software? I’m torn between that and Mac Clip Library by Imagine Products.

Great to hear that’s a solid foundation.
One other question is what’s the proper format for my external hard drives. I’m assuming fat32 is the way to go.

I’ll investigate to see if there is somewhere that 29.97 got into the mix. Original footage was shot on the red one camera at 23.98. I transcoded to prores at that frame rate and thought I used it throughout the process but it looks like that wasn’t the case.

when I export the tiff sequence there is a box to enter the frame rate. I enter 23.976. My fcp sequence setting is 23.98 (prores hq). I also tried 23.98 for my tiff export but get the same issue.

yes time remap sucks in fcp. I also come from an avid backround and will soon explore motion to see if there is an easier way…although it’s an extra step of course to something that should be so simple.
