not so much lazy as forgetful. I was testing new settings and forgot to change it back. Because I only imported 1 file, and that too was a test, no harm was done.
Soon after I posted is when the realization hit me.

I Found out what I needed to do to get all caps!
Because I used that Motion template, I’m able to use the ‘all caps’ parameter on my Motion layer. That solves the problem. Now in Final Cut, as I enter my text in the Motion template in lowercase, it updates my canvas real time all in caps. I don’t need to get near that caps lock now!
But I feel bad for people that use the normal text titling features in FCP while entering all caps.

actually I discovered a work around, sort of. I didn’t give all the details in my original post in what I was doing but here it is:
I created a text template in motion to use in final cut. We have pre-made graphical backgrounds that this text must align to and fit in. Thus my need to view the results in my canvas while typing. Toggling the caps lock on and off is a solution, but something I would rather avoid if possible. Doing that thousands of times a day to see my alignment would drive me crazy.

Motion template works like a dream for what I’m doing. But I’ve run into another issue you may know a workaround for. I need to enter my text for lower thirds, full page graphics and such in all caps. However, when turning on the caps lock key in Final Cut, I lose the ability to see updates I’m making because that render warning message disables my canvas. Any suggestions?

I need to add text to my timeline. We just moved over from Inscriber to do all our titling needs. However, all of our lower thirds, full page quotes and such are capitalized. Needless to say, it’s a royal pain to hold down the shift key while typing a full page quote.

I used Adam’s approach and it worked well. I was keying LA Lakers on a green screen and the yellow jersey was a problem. Why don’t the Lakers use a blue screen for their media day shoot??
one note on the hue/saturation effect: I used the green channel to adjust to blue screen. I didn’t use colorize.

If it wasn’t mentioned already, make sure the drives you copy to are properly formatted. I format mine FAT32. This way both my mac and pc can read the files. A warning though: Don’t edit from those those drives. Give them to your editor and have him copy the files to his edit drive/raid. You will eventually run into a problem with file sizes if you edit from FAT32 drives.
I’ve experienced these formatting problems while taking on projects before and it is a nightmare. I’ve had one camera Op give me 2 drives with different formatting and I couldn’t read one of them. Too bad you can’t test your workflow first.
And don’t even attempt to format FAT32 from a PC. Windows has a 32 gig size limitation while formatting FAT32, however, larger drives can be done with some helper applications (but I hear the results are mixed). I format on my mac with no helper applications and no hassle (and in about 15 seconds).
