[Noah Kadner] “”This is in addition to a report I submitted on X date,” it will be connected.”

I can’t help but see that as inefficient given the number of reports they’re dealing with. I personally can’t remember the dates I’ve submitted issues.

It’s not that I think a case number should obligate them to personal communications (case numbers can be automated and don’t imply personal follow up) but simply for my own record so I can include the case number if I have something to add at a future point.

The same would help with feature requests because, as months go by, I can’t differentiate between requests I’ve sent in and those I haven’t yet.

The result is that, cumulatively, Apple may well be hearing the same request numerous times from the same people.

I do wish Apple responded to Issues and Feature Requests with a Case Number.
That would allow users to send supplemental information tied to crash reports.

On requests it would confirm that it’s been received and serve as a reminder that a request has already been submitted so one doesn’t forget and resubmit the same request again.

Drop zones in Motion or just buy the $29 Drops plugin from Ripple Training.

[Bill Marcellus] “So, so easy. Yet in four years they haven’t figured out a way to add them to Generators?”

Yet so much broadcast work is being done in FCPX without them. Perhaps they’re not mission critical. I guess one might want them if going out to tape or some other analog workflow. Perhaps they feel its solve by third parties. They don’t include an adjustment layer either yet that’s easily solved by making your own in Motion or through various third parties.

I’d prefer Apple focus on things not easily solved by third parties such as improvements in Roles, two up keyboard trimming, Replace using playhead, ganging, Viewers that can compare two points on the timeline.

One “wild” thought is that he may have things he wanted to add to FCPX that are outside of Apple’s constraints. Perhaps he’s got plugin features he feels he can add by developing independently. Own boss on own clock with no Apple overlord.

It all depends on how you imported them. They can be within the library or external to it if you set it that way. If you were working off the card and FCPX gave you the option to leave files in place (it shouldn’t though) then the files left with the card. Part of project management is determining where your media is going. Generally I create a card archive using FCPX import media and then do the actual import from the archive.

Ready for the next round of Kremlinology.

At least it’ll be interesting to see who will head the Video Photo division.

  • I think there’s a best performance, best quality setting which might have impact. Just a wild guess because it does bite a few people when they think there’s a quality issue that shouldn’t be there.

  • From the Compressor 3.5 manual.

The Preview window has additional features, including a marker management pop-up menu. The marker management pop-up menu allows you to import chapter lists or manually add chapter (and podcast) markers and compression markers (to improve the compression quality of your media file). You can also view Edit/Cut compression markers that were generated in other applications such as Final Cut Pro. If you are sending a Final Cut Pro project to Compressor, these settings or markers are transferred with your project. These markers are also exported to DVD Studio Pro. See Working with MPEG-2 I-Frames and More About GOPs and Markers for more information.

    • Compression markers: Compression markers are also known as manual compression markers. These are markers you can add to a Final Cut Pro sequence (or in the Compressor Preview window) to indicate when Compressor should generate an MPEG I-frame during compression. See Understanding GOPs and Frame Types for more information on I-frames.
These markers appear as blue in the Preview window timeline and are the type created when you manually add markers using Compressor. You can convert compression markers into chapter markers using the Edit item of the Markers pop-up menu.

  • First try CBR set to 6.5mbps and see how that works.

Placing Compression Markers is easy. It’s in the User Manual. I haven’t used 3.5.3 in some time though. There should be some sort of Add Marker command.
