If you have FCP5 than you should have Compressor 2. Export a Quicktime Movie (self contained or reference). Put that in Compressor and start with a preset. Duplicate and alter settings to your desire. Read the PDF Compressor manual.

Limit Effect in the Color Corrector allows to alter by Color, luma, saturation. You can also use Garbage Matte or any other Matte.

For Blur, Glow etc. actually Boris Continuume Complete filter set does this within its filters. It has a Pixel Chooser function which allows you to select what parts of the image will be affected. You can of course do this with Mattes too.

I think you really need to read the FCP manual about Matte Filters etc. and maybe Kevin Monahan’s book “Motion Graphics and Effects for Final Cut Pro.”

Basically Constrained sets an upper limit to the variable bit rate. In certain parts of a VBR encode, a very complex frame by frame change can create a very high bit rate peak. Constrained prevents that from happening by setting an upper limit.

Add .mov to the file allows one to import file into Squeeze without dragging. Although it’s a bit of a drag to have to do that.

If you’re coming from an http server (progressive download), break it in to smaller chunks otherwise people will have long waits while enough file buffers to play. If people can’t sit through the whole thing they’ll have to start over again on the next visit. I’d break it in to three parts. I finde a data rate range of 300kpbs to 800 kbps reasonable depending on the the typical DSL/Cable speeds in the area you target. File size is important if you’re nearing your size alotment or monthly throughput limit.

Check your timeline for Gaps. Fill gaps with black slug.

What happens at 3:30 in your timeline?

If you have any gaps, fill them with black slug so there’s video content.

Try exporting the timeline as Quicktime selfcontained and check to see you have full audio and video in Quicktime. THEN export to AVI using QuicktimePro.

The only time I’ve ever been asked to export to AVI is if someone will continue editing on Windows NLE. If this is not the case than someone needs to talk to your client and explain why WMV9 is better than AVI.

Why? WMV works fine for high speed connections. Looks great. Too many Windows folks don’t/won’t put Quicktime on their computers. You’ll also find many folks can’t handle H.264 Quicktime since they don’t have Quicktime 7 yet. SorensonPro still looks very good though.

Flip4Mac is from Telestream. You get the trial version with Squeeze 4.1. There’s a $99 1 pass encode version and a $179 2 pass encode plus HD frame sizes with 5.1/7.1 surround too. Isn’t it better that the user has the option to buy (or not) and chose which version rather than make everyone pay a higher price. Of course one may feel every Mac compressionist should have WM9 encoding in their arsenal.

Don’t forget that Cleaner users had to pay extra for Sorenson Pro or buy Squeeze which included it. Cleaner, it seems, still only does WMV7 so one would have to get Flip4Mac in addition to Sorenson Pro to cover all the bases.

Others might feel getting Compressor 2 “free” with FCP5 or DVDSP4 and then buying Flip4Mac is a bargain compression combo. It depends on your needs.
