  • How to I get my Quicktime movie on the web?

Posted by Simon Malcolm on December 16, 2005 at 7:59 am

Hi there, I have made a 3 minute movie in FCP 5 and want to send it to someone to put on a website. He has asked me for an mpg file which does not exceed 2MB. There doesn’t seem to be any way to export from FCP 5 that will allow me to create a file that doesn’t rely on the end user having QuickTime 7. What do I do?

An MPEG file is a quicktime file. Quicktime is a “wrapper” for the MPEG codec.

What we usually do is in FCP, go to file–>export–>using Quicktime conversion. Set your Format to Quicktime Movie, and “Use” to either 300k, 1400k, LAN, etc depending on your file limitations. Or, open Quicktime Pro, import your finished movie, Click on Export, and set it to Quicktime Movie, using again the internet settings that drive you wild!
    Hope this helps.

If you have FCP5 than you should have Compressor 2. Export a Quicktime Movie (self contained or reference). Put that in Compressor and start with a preset. Duplicate and alter settings to your desire. Read the PDF Compressor manual.

Just about any encoding you can do in QuickTime Pro individually you can create presets in Compressor. That way you can adjust the parameters in the new presets until you get your desired 2MB file. You can then batch encode your FCP timeline in Compressor for the right combination of quality and file size–i.e. you are encoding the same file with different encode settings unattended from wihtin Compressor’s batch mode.

Going to be hard to get a decent quality movie of 3 minutes length under 2 megs.
I just checked one of the websites that I manage, and the news is pretty grim.

QT movies vary, but here are the basics of what I have on the site.

    30 seconds, QT movie, 320×240 1.6 MB
    30 seconds AT movie 240×180 724KB
    1 minute 56 seconds QT movie 320×240 6.6 MB.
