Thanks Dave,
Very clear. On my Mac at home I have a separate 3 port 800 card for the external drive and all works fine. My only concern now on the school computer is whether capturing constantly to the system drive, even though I don’t edit on it, will fragment the drive.
I also thought that the 800 port at the back would be on a different bus than the 400 port on the front of the G5. I guess not.

Hi Tom,
At work, I have a G5 that won’t recognize my camcorder used as a deck if my external firewire 800 drive is plugged in, mounted or not. Could I daisy chain the camcorder to the external drive? I’m asking rather than trying it because I’d have to purchase a firewire cable that has a camera plug and an 800 plug. Does one of these exist? The way I work now is to capture to the system drive, then copy to the external drive, then trash the project on the system drive. An extra step I could live without. A second internal drive is on order but even then I need to move the projects to other computers–thus the external drive.
Thanks

Frequently recommended choice. Remember, when you edit, you want to hear a neutral presentation, not something that sweetens the sound or picture.

I’d avoid the head cleaning tape. Use only in an emergency. It’s sand paper. If your heads need service take it in for a pro cleaning. Also if the heads are clogged try running a tape through in fast foward and then rewind. This often clears a clog without hurting the heads. If the tape is bad try a new batch and find out. If it’s your cam, take it in for service.

I doubt this will help but you never know. From the user manual:

The lab has two Canon zr-80s. Yes, I pulled out every rubber/plastic flap I could find. I downloaded the manual, I’m not very good at figuring out menu settings without it, and read several reviews that talked about the features. There is no mic input. In fact, Sony, Canon, JVC are all taking this port off many of their consumer cams. I cancelled an order for a Sony DCR-HC32 and replaced it with a PANASONIC PVGS35 because the pana has a mic input. However it does not have headphone output (sigh!). At least with the mic input, later on, I can add an xlr adapter or small mixer. To be honest on a student level, the picture quality of these mini-cams will do. What I want to get across is the production process including monitoring, manual settings, working as a team, etc. Without external mics most of the projects are ruined, either you can’t hear what is being said at all or the competing noise is irritating. I also figure learning to sync the soundtrack is not a bad skill to acquire.

If the same cable and port work for another drive then they are not the problem. I would reformat it using any combo that does recognise it and then try it again on the problem port. I would also check to see if there is any firmware update from the drive company or the firewire card company.

sounds like you could use a hot swap enclosure. this would give you unlimited storage that you could load and unload as needed. the above link sells good ones. no more plugging and unplugging firewire cables.
