    Hi Ty

The wall design is for what I plan to build. The planes problem are at an already built studio.

So a double wall that does not touch each other works using air between them? I thought people used sand or other higher end material to go between the two walls???

For inside a studio, does any of the corning 703s/704s work better than the others or is it just different sizes and number of panels in the package. They have a lot of different ones on their site.

    Hi Ty,

I meant what do I use between the double walls?

And what does the ceiling/roof need between them?

The studio where I work picks up the sound through the roof

including airplanes and helicopters. Its hard to tell sometimes where sound is coming from, but I used a long boom and headphones and got my microphones as close to all the walls and ceiling as I could and that’s where the sound was coming from. But I don’t own that studio and all I can do is suggest things.

I want to design mine as well as I can afford. I’d rather have less space and better sound than vice versa.

I looked up corning 703. Lots of different 703 panel versions. Does it mater – will any of them do the trick? The most expensive is “sound proof” (I think that’s a 704).

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks for help Ty. (I didn’t see your post till I got on CCow to see what everyone thought of the new iMac OS). My plan is to have a studio built by a company that builds log cabin houses. It will allow for a lot of different shots for film and photography. Is this doable for sound control? I though if I asked them to have two walls on the outside walls it would help a lot. And Acoustic Panels in the studio area inside. On the outside double walls, what material would you recommend to fill the gap? And what Acoustic Panels would you recommend? Also will windows be a problem? Would the right drapes help sound as well? They can double as backdrops.

I use Hyper Cardioid Microphones mounted on boom poles over head on a lot of shots. They are pretty sensitive so they do pick up whatever is around but also very directional. Perhaps the ceiling and roof will be a factor as well. If I have it built with some thought to sound I will defiantly consider a consultation if there are problems.

Way more heat, electricity, and changing gels can be a pain, and you need to get up there to make changes. The LEDs are great for backgrounds. Was not crazy about Source 4’s way of moving between different configurations. (Arri does a great job with that aspect. But $$$. ) There are so many new Spot lights LEDs. Would like to hear suggestions here. Other than Source 4.

I would try the Flume 2 app (I have not used it for video but does a nice job with photos and it does do video — I give them higher resolution shots and they do a nice job of getting it into Instagram). But Instagram is not very high resolution regardless. Considering what its for and how much $$$$$$$ they have, its kinda WHAT? Google drive has much better resolution and processing but they are not set up well for social media. They expect people to be collaborating with your media. What world are they living in. This isn’t Hollywood. The collaboration happens during production not usually in post at the editing stage. At least give the option for people to download but not change what is posted.

That goes back to JOBS. I think he did not want other companies to steal his ideas. But it never was very good for end users. What was worse? EOLing apps instead of updating them or until a new app truly replaced them. What happened to Photos replacing Aperture? They said it would replace Aperture and iPhoto. That was an interesting idea. There is no reason that a hobbyist can’t use pro apps. Pro apps, and equipment for that matter, are easier not harder to use. Pro apps are designed to work, not limit what it can do to be easy. More hobbyist and pros in the industry, who were not pro editors, used FCP than full time pro editors. The learning curve is about the same and by using pro apps you will be using concepts and vocabulary that will exist a lot longer and you’ll be using a vocabulary and techniques that will work with a lot of gear and apps not just a given one. Take Photos instead of the Photos that was going to replace Aperture. There is no problem with its RAM processing or how the app functions; but it very limited in features. Apple literally tells people to use Creative Cloud. Aperture and what we expected from Photos was never going to replace Creative Cloud; but it was a great alternative. I was really looking forward to Photos. Creative Cloud to me is more like digital painting than photo editing. It obviously can do both; but I don’t need to paint. I just want to edit and store my shots. Aperture was getting old. I expected better. Particularly since Apple did get FCP X way better than when it first came out. Now its a great deal. Too bad Apple helped Adobe make lots of $$$ by FCP X not be ready for prime time and Aperture not be updated and then EOL. It has allowed monthly payments to be a norm. The school where I teach Video Production wants to offer it to all the students. I think its a bad idea. What happens when they graduate? Many of them won’t be able to afford it.

Hi. Starting to make sense. Thanks Patrick.

I’ve used CCC (yes update to 5 a while back) for many years.
And I’m happy with it. I back up my IMac
as well as all my external FCP and photography drives
I have never used Time Machine.
I think I will in the future once this is set up.
I’ve heard that Time Machine does full backups in case of a dead internal drive
and you never know when Apple will not let a third party work with the latest update.
But so far I have no problems with CCC.

“Migration Assistant to copy user data files and settings from the internal drive to the external drive…”

This is where I have questions.

Does using Migration Assistant still keep the update clean?

There was a time that was not considered clean by video editors.

Will all my Mail and Messages be put where I had them (folders and so forth) with Migration Assistant update?

Will Aperture still work? Even though its not updated, I still have old photos that were
edited with it. And sometimes I use another app to process RAW and then use Aperture sent by Tiff for certain edits. Less and less but sometimes Aperture brushes or color correction get the job done. Do not want to use a monthly amount for a photo app. And do not want to pay full amount for an update.

Still haven’t found a home since Aperture was EOL. I’m going to try On 1.

    Have CCC 5….
And don’t see the worth in getting a new Computer.
But would like more space in the computer SSD is only 500GB. running low though I’m sure there is a bunch of trash.

From what I have read sometimes catalina is ok and sometimes is a problem. I think Mojave would be fine. Any easy steps to do a clean install. It’s always been a problem for me. Wonder if it would work to set it up on an external drive and and boot from there and see how thing go?

Any reasonable $? help in LA to get a clean install done for me . I have too much work to do without going through the stress I always have with clean installs.

I hope this group can help me.
    I have an iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, Late 2015)
    4 GHz Intel Core i7
    40 GB 1867 MHz DDR3
    AMD Radeon R9 M395X 4096 MB
I use external just a bunch of drives for photography and video FCPx
    and back ups.

My computer would crash a lot when I first got it after a clean install
and a ton of help and hours did not solve it.
At each new macOS update it got better.

I am on macOS Sierra. I am over ready to move on.
Only really cause I can’t update the newer Apps.
I have heard for a long time that Catalina is buggy with FCP X.

BUT i read it was getting its act together now.

So Mojave or Catalina? I have used Mojave at work and it was a lot of work to get it all set up.

And any suggestions to start clean again or just update?

And any advice on how to do the clean install. That is a solid how to. I use Carbon Copy Cloner for back ups. I could set up Time Machine. Have never used it. Been told why not?

Also any good places to go in LA to install a bigger internal drive and maybe get this all updated for me. Not because I can’t learn but because I never seem to have the time for it. And would prefer that someone who knows it well just gets it done.

And is a new computer a better option? It seems like the late 2015 still are being used. But if its money not well spent, I’ll listen to that as well.

    Any help would be great.

    thanks
