This is a very interesting discussion. It’s not just this industry that often is trying to do more with less.
I think in lean times camera operators become audio techs and editors. One-man bands are being employed more and more.

The up side to the limitations this produces (pun intended) is that everyone is better off for knowing every one else’s job. The cam operator who has been responsible for audio will most likely work better with an audio tech when they are provided with that luxury. And from the client’s pov, since all members of team are educated in each other’s craft, no one will be allowed to get away with lazy work just because they are indispensable.

why is the I5 faster than the I7?

The 10.5.8 is the laptop I’m using. Graphic card in it will not work with FCP X.

The pegasus raid has two thunderbolt ports.

The 4 gig ram is what comes from Apple.

I plan to order 12 or 16 gig from OWC.

Hubs will come down in price I hope.

The nine I have are on snow leopard but can be upgraded to Lion. They have one thunderbolt port.
The other specs are for brand new Imacs and would come with lion.

What spec is not clear?

The video production class shoots a variety of short form videos, some of which require a voice over added in post. It is rare that we can record anything isolated from group noise. I have 4-5 production teams per class. This just looked like it was possible to block some of the surrounding environment.

Can you recommend a portable sound booth of some kind or does this really take a room designed for this purpose?

Also if we were to use the TLM102 directly into an editing program will the mixpre-d do the trick. I know it can provide the phantom power required.

Also would you advise a thrid party shock mount or does the stand mount that comes with it do the trick?

If you have a fairly new mac then you need a 400 to 800 firewire cable. Looks like that Cam has the full size 400 cable not the mini ones on many mini-cams. Imovie supports HDV. Try it and if its not working explain the problem. Plenty of Imovie forums. If Imovie is not seeing the cam then try quitting Imovie and having the camera booted up and in playback mode and try launching Imovie. Still not working try rebooting the Mac. I don’t use this combo but this was my experience in the past.

The mac pro has two headphone out ports (front and back) and an optical digital out port.

Thanks. I’ll do a search for voice over and for boom poles and see what’s been said. The Schoeps and 744T are on my wish list unless someone like Ty says such and such is a better choice for a boom set up.
