Thanks great post. I use the range tool but often feel like a klutz with it. This will help. Still struggling with different behaviors for different types of clips in the timeline.

You’re right of course. But I forgot I had apps open the other day while needing to reboot since I am in the middle of a fresh install and slowly moving things over. In any case it seemed like Mavericks attempts to close things down properly not just force quitting. But I could be wrong. But I even got a warning about one open app still processing in b.g. Nothing was messed up though it’s not a normal practice of mine. I also lost electricity the other day and everything was open. No harm no foul. So far so lucky but just wondering if Mavericks does not have some built in protection of data and such. I know Apple is moving towards this with their new apps auto saving.

After that post I tried opening ms office installed on my original partition (10.7) while booted in the Mavericks drive. It seemed fine but treated the app as if I had just installed it. Mavericks doesn’t like to share apparently. That meant it created a microsoft user data folder that I needed to remove from its library location before I went ahead and installed MS office 2008 from original install disc. Very important to remove all traces of ms office from the drive you are installing to. Don’t need to repeat steps for that since it was a very easy google search to find the list of possible files. With a clean install there should’t be any of these hidden folders unless you test from another drive first. I have disc images of most of my app installers. The ms office one worked fine. The updates that I also saved would not open. So I just used MS word’s check for updates and this took some time. MS does not merge the latest update to cover the previous ones. I think it was three in all. Painless but time consuming. Seems to work fine but I’ve only used it seriously for one word doc so far. There are reports on line of MS messing up your font collection and moving it to a duplicate font folder. It did not do this for me. or to me I should say. Also reports that their error reporting app may cause problems. Again a google search will let you know how to uninstall this “feature”. 2008 is no longer supported so you might want to go with 2011. Personally I preferred 2004 or the one before that. Though excel improved in some ways word at some point lost macros and added a ribbon. So none of my old screenplays which I formatted using macros have retained their formatting. I like writing scripts in word before importing into final draft.

I think its downhill from here but if I run into any gotchas I’ll report back.

Thanks Ty. We have the 5D mark III and 302 mixer. I did adjust the 302 on one shoot to mike level out with good results. I did this because we were using a cordless kit as a wireless connection and the wireless transmitter needed mike level in. Worked well and calibration held true. But I know from previous posts that you ride your gain higher than I do simply because I need more headroom working with students.

The DR-60 seems to be offering quite a bit for that price. Does it really have good preamps and a good recorder? Are you using the camera’s recorder only as a reference? I’ve read reviews of the DR-60 from raves to poor preamps and a plastic feel.

I was over at Trew audio in LA and they are a big sound devices dealer and repair shop. An audio tech there told me that the sound devices mixers are great for dialog but not really music mixers. He recommended that I start looking at using our mackie mixer with a lap top and software to capture music. Just what I need more computer apps to learn and relearn. Regardless, your thoughts appreciated.

A rep from Kino told me that they are a bit pink but that this improves after x number of hours of use.

Do you think this is true? I had called them when I noticed the different temp compared to our fresnels (all studio temp).

BUT I would not forget safety cables for each lamp. and the clamps as well.

except for back lights that are difficult to get out of shots or for lighting a green screen or other back ground, I really prefer using lights (particularly Kino Flos) on floor stands like a baby jr. Climbing up to the grid to make adjustments or moving them to a new location is kind of a pain. But if they are mounted absolutely where you want them then it’s certainly nice for a permanent set of some sort .

We were feeding the 5D from a TASCAM DR-60D line out and barely cracked the 5D input. When we did the result was noisier. So careful gain staging has to be observed.

We are just getting our feet wet with the 5D. I took it on our first photo shoot a couple days ago and it’s a great still cam. Next up movie mode. Had not considered using it for sound until your post just now.

What do you mean by “barely cracked the 5D input” My experience with most cameras is they like mike level inputs from mixers. Would the mike level input from a 302 do the trick and what level on the 5D starts to get noisy? As an alternative I was thinking of just using a Ki pro under the 5D as the audio video recorder. The 5D also has HDMI out at very good quality. The Ki Pro records good audio but has limited meters and poor headphone output.

yes latest all things apple via app store. did not have this in the previous version of FCP X but I was on OS 10.7.5 not 10.8. Black Magic said they would try to reproduce the problem.

Well first FCP 10.1 and Mavericks in general seem fine. Been editing a lot and the only glitch is an occasional unexpected quit concerning my decklink plug in.

I’ve decided to keep it clean as in no migration app.

First step was to get my mail accounts in the new Maverick drive.

here’s the steps:

Mail from 10.7>Mavericks
Delete from Mavericks
1) Home >library>containers>com.apple.mail.
2) User account>library>mail folder
On 10.7
Copy : home>library>mail folder
Paste in maverick’s home>library: the mail folder from 10.7

That’s it. Worked fine for my pop accounts with all my folders brought over. Needed to reenter passwords for each account.
