Options for recording audio with DSLR video? Where to send the signal?
Hey guys. I’m trying to decide the best practice for most audio recording while shooting DSLR video.
Let me preface this, I’m always recording with a proper mic. Either a boom, shotgun, or lav. I’m never recording using the camera’s mic. I just need to know the best way to record the signal.
Record in camera – This seems to me to be the worst option concerning quality. I’ve only tried running the mic into the camera a couple times, but it seems noisy. Maybe I’m not doing it right, I do have a lot to learn. But this way has the least equipment and has the least likelihood of something coming disconnected or forgetting to hit a record button.
Record with a Zoom or Tascam – I have the most experience with these options. I have noticed some trouble with the Zoom I’ve rented though. With my AT shotgun mic I can only get a level of about -24 to -18. It’s salvageable, but certainly not ideal. A guy I work with has the Tascam, but I haven’t used it much yet. Plus, these are kind of clunky and slow to operate.
Record onto an external recorder – I still haven’t decided what I think of the Ninja. That’s the only external recorder I’ve used. The functionality is great, but it could be more flexible. I’ve always recorded onto a Zoom while using the Ninja. I’m not even sure if it’ll record sound as I only noticed the mic-in port while I was already shooting last time.
Involve a Beachtek adaptor somehow – I used to use a Beachtek to hook XLR to my Sony FX1 (3.5mm only). I always thought it worked great. But I haven’t used anything like that with DSLR. With a Beachtek could I get better sound recording right in the camera?
What do you guys recommend? What’s going to be the best sound and the least troublesome?
Thanks, all!
