I have done this on short films without any problems. And with good results. But since I remember reading a number of times here and elsewhere that high res photos clog up FC, I thought I’d check. The other thing I remember reading is that the full res photos don’t end up looking any better anyway so why take up the space? Anyway glad it works without a performance hit.

Which is why I asked what settings I should use when I export these raw images out of Aperture. Any suggestions?

So FC will adjust the size? I’ve read repeatedly the full size photos slow FC down. Should the preset be optimized?

I don’t have trouble importing them but want to know what size photos to export so they are not overkill for FC in terms of size.

I just tried those setting on a 3.66 gig file which got reduced to 94MB and it looks really good. I made the slider really slow. Does this increase file size or just improves quality?

Thanks. I have a lot of headroom in terms of size is there an adjustment to bit rate that would increase quality and not go over the 8 gig limit?

this came in at under 4 gigs. so we have twice as much space if needed for better quality.

Thanks. I could see where easing in and out of a correction would make it more natural looking bout can’t see the downside to allowing any modification to apply to a selection. For now, we’ll blade it up as needed.

Solved. FCP preferences> choose different drive> Open a library> 15 minutes later, a back up appears as a folder named the same as the open event. Each event gets its own folder. The 15 min delay had me thinking it wasn’t working.

As a test, I moved the external raid to another computer. I trashed that computer’s FC back-up folder and in FC preferences, with a library open, created a folder called FCP X library back ups on the raid. So far nothing has been backed up there.
