  • So I don’t claim to be very experienced with Camtasia, but I couldn’t open the provided clip with my trial download of the software. Maybe a cross platform thing? I don’t know.

And having the Camtasia software didn’t seem to affect the readability in Premiere or Quicktime.

Recording the screen while playing the movie in VLC and then just exporting the new project worked splendidly though. Reasonably good quality and only somewhat of a pain in my tushy.

I think in the future though, I will have people come to my machine to do screen captures, just to save a step.

  • So I’ve downloaded the trial for Camtasia. I played the video in VLC whilst recording the screen and I’m working on getting a decent looking file out of the Camtasia studio now. It’s getting a little soft, which is the case with multi gen I suppose, but I’ll see what I can do.

    Thanks for the help.

November 3, 2011 at 7:30 pm in reply to: Lighting white studio in video

So I’m wondering if this is a photo/video studio or a dance/gymnastics studio? The space you describe sounds more like the latter of the two.

If it is indeed a dance or gymnastics type place, I probably wouldn’t change too much, because it sounds perfect for what usually happens there.

I my opinion, you should rent a curtainy type back drop to put against whatever wall will be at the back of your shot. Shoot after sundown so you don’t have to compete with the light and then you can rent some lighting that won’t have to coordinate with the daylight’s color.

I’d light it with something focusable and directional to help give your performers shape and keep the light attractive and under control. Don’t forget that you will need some fill though. Maybe more directional lights or you could bounce something off a remaining white wall.

If this is a photo studio, than just pretend that I didn’t say any of this.

    Thanks.

July 29, 2011 at 2:46 pm in reply to: How to maximize preview render times

Todd, that’s funny, ’cause when I got the email from your response I was wondering why it’d sound like a sales pitch. Then when I saw the big, red “A” on the forum post it hit me.

My department is all getting new machines with CS5 suites over the next few months so I’ll definitely be looking forward to that. I appreciate the advice.

So I have been learning more about how bad HDV is. I’m trying to learn to change my workflow to get out of HDV. I got some advice to use MPEGStreamclip to convert but I don’t always have time and space. It’s not always practical for me to properly document clips and then just convert what I’m going to use, and if I try to convert a whole shoot, that’s a whole lotta megabites. It should work ok though if I just get a little more organized and better at keeping tidy notes. I rarely have “talent” in front of the camera. It’s usually department heads and such, so it’s pretty much a train wreck until I get some b-roll in there to hide all the nonsense I had to cut out.

So a capture card… Here’s what I usually do – Sony FX1 hooked with firewire to my MacBook Pro recording on to an external HD with OnLocation. Could I put one of these Black Magic or Kona dohickies in there to convert to a better format while recording? Would it just go between the camera and the computer? Because that would be awesome. It would cut the amount of time a project takes in half, easily.

July 29, 2011 at 2:29 pm in reply to: So you like FCP then?

PPro isn’t terrible on previews. You don’t have to render out to see anything like in AE. It will play but not smoothly, kind of like every 1/10-20 frames with gravely audio. It’s only after you add effects and transitions though. As long as you’re working in your captured format, it flies.

I’ve been hearing a lot of complaints about FCP X, what’s going on? Has Apple dumbed it down or something? Just wondering. Sounds like I may be very glad that I learned on Adobe.

So FCP vs. PPro sounds like just a preference thing than, like anything else. I don’t really have friends in the industry, so I could probably get a pretty black and white response to DeWalt vs. Makita or Chevy vs. Ford. That stuff all sounds like a bunch of malarky to me though.

    Thanks for your responses, everybody.

For what it’s worth, I use Designer SFX, and the other Video Copilot stuff all the time. Perfect for all those little swooshes and stuff.

I never remember to reply when I’m all done with stuff.

I just wound up learning how to use the convolution reverb effect and it worked out great. Some of the presets for that effect were pretty close and then just a couple more tweaks.

I really like Sonicfire Pro too. Being able to adjust length, tempo and hits and whatnot without any editing is priceless.

So say you could go to pretty much any video event you wanted to, training or convention or whatever. What would be your first choice.

I’m finding it difficult to even google the subject as the words “corporate, video, training” just brings up “Corporate Training Video”. I’ve always heard great things about the NAB expo but I’m just wondering what else is out there.

    Thanks.

I’d be going to the one in Pasadena. Nothing quite so exciting as NYC.

    Thanks for the info though.
