  • I need to edit a Camtasia capture from a Windows machine in Premiere Pro CS5 on a Mac…

Posted by Corbin Gross on November 23, 2011 at 4:47 pm

I got an .avi file from the presenter. He captured using Camtasia on his PC. I’ve got to edit this into the rest of his video. I’m using a Mac with CS5.5. I can’t import due to a codec issue, neither can I play in the Quicktime player. I cannot convert using Mpegstreamclip or FFMpegX, not sure why, they just don’t do anything. It will play in VLC but I’m not aware of any export options there.

The file is an .avi, which is supposed to be compatible but I’m not super experienced with codecs. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Thanks.

i know on QT, TechSmith (Camtasia’s manufacturer) has a codec they call “ensharpen”

…but I’m not sure that will handle the AVI-wrapped file for you.

If nothing else, Camtasia for Mac has a 30 day trial you could try to download and see if it can read the file:

So I’ve downloaded the trial for Camtasia. I played the video in VLC whilst recording the screen and I’m working on getting a decent looking file out of the Camtasia studio now. It’s getting a little soft, which is the case with multi gen I suppose, but I’ll see what I can do.

    Thanks for the help.

Doesn’t Camtasia Studio just load the clip so you can simply convert it?

There is an app in the Camtasia suite on Windows that’s an “editor/converter” sort of thing that does conversion pretty well.

Coming from a video editing background, the workflow is a little wonky, but I use it all the time and really like the results…very clean.

Of course the nice thing about Premiere Pro is you simply set up a sequence with the screen grab frame dimensions and frame rate and avoid scaling in the edit as well…

Now that you have the codec on your mac. See if you can open the supplied AVI and then you can convert.

Use QT7 and just export to animation codec mov

So I don’t claim to be very experienced with Camtasia, but I couldn’t open the provided clip with my trial download of the software. Maybe a cross platform thing? I don’t know.

And having the Camtasia software didn’t seem to affect the readability in Premiere or Quicktime.

Recording the screen while playing the movie in VLC and then just exporting the new project worked splendidly though. Reasonably good quality and only somewhat of a pain in my tushy.

I think in the future though, I will have people come to my machine to do screen captures, just to save a step.

Seek out the techsmith codec as mentioned – give that a try.

    I didn’t realize that’s a different thing. I will check it out.
