Hi Brad,
I just upgraded my i7 3.4 GHz Gateway workstation to the 2GB Radeon R9 270X. I replaced the stock PSU with a 750 watt Thermaltake recommended by a local PC repair shop. The shop charged me $25 to install the R9 and the PSU. On 1st reboot my 2nd hard drive and Blu ray burner were not showing up.The tech said the biggest challenge is connecting, bunching, and cable tying the internal cables from the new PSU, as they are lengthy. After checking all connections everything worked fine and that was a month ago. I usually pay for the install because I don’t install video cards/PSU’s every day and that’s what my local tech does. I also listen to the tech’s recommendations. He said the Thermaltake was quieter and he had fewer returns compared to some other models. I also check prices on my phone and his price was actually $10 cheaper than Best Buy.
In running Vegas 13 Pro, the first thing I noticed was I could enable GPU and have a 3 camera multicam preview running smoothly at best quality on my second monitor. Hope this helps with your decision.Colin Mendez Morris

IMHO Sony will start putting most of it’s development resources behind the Catalyst product line. At some point they decided to develop a dual platform product that incorporates clip/workflow management, 4K, color correction etc to compete with Avid, Premiere, and Final Cut. They will still support Vegas for a while, but I see a lot of features in the Catalyst products that seem to point towards capturing a piece of the future high end NLE market.

A technique I have used in the past is to duplicate the audio onto multiple tracks and use each track for a different plugin/treatment-then sync them together again to get the sound you want. For example track 1 may have a denoiser plugin at one setting and track 2 the same plugin at another setting. The trick is to not try to do everything on a single track. Duplicate the section of dialogue, treat it, and then mix them back together.
BTW- As Mike suggested, get a copy of Jay Rose’s book. It has saved me several times over the years.Colin Mendez Morris

One of the methods used in film is ADR (Automatic Dialogue Replacement) The actor goes into a studio and re-records his/her audio in sync while watching the video/film scene. Vegas is very good for this because you have full featured video and audio in the same application. The set up is very similar to recording voice overs. The actor wears closed back headphones to hear the original audio and you record clean new audio while the actor watches the scene. The final dialog is usually a mix of real sound and ADR.
Another method that helps to get clean audio is to use a digital recorder that can record 2 different input levels at the same time. You set one channel to record a lower level and another to record a hotter level. This way, if your hot level distorts, you can use the lower one. I would highly recommend buying a book on film and video sound recording techniques. It will list all of these techniques in detail.

I would sync first, then once you have the multicam track created you can switch between takes.
Make sure all your tracks are video/audio, video/audio…as you go down before you create a multicamera track. I have noticed that in Vegas 11/12 it does not like if the tracks are not in that order. I usually put the audio files on top of each other to sync, then move them back to the regular order. Also-there are a few 3rd party tools that do multicam with more functionality. (VAAST etc)

Scott and John have described stems pretty well and I think that would be the way to go if you are responsible for everything. I usually mix the dialog first using Sound Forge and Audacity from within SVP. This keeps the dialog with any picture edits within Vegas.
Stems come in really handy with sound effects and music. For example, I would track music in Cubase with all necessary processing and plug in effects, then mix down all the tracks to 2 music stems. The music stems would then go on to 2 tracks in Vegas.
I would also recommend picking up a reference book or two:
Audio Post Production for Film and TV by Mark Cross is a good recent reference.

I have used SVP in projects for sound and picture. Pro Tools is the standard for audio mixing but we have had to work with different composers who all seem to have their own favorite software(Logic, Cubase, Reaper, Sibelius, Finale) With SVP and Cubase you really have everything covered. Cubase is great for midi, soft synths, samples as well as audio. For editing dialog you should use Sound Forge or Audacity from within SVP. We usually provide the client wave files that all start at the same point. That way they can import to any software they want. It really depends on how much of the project is your responsibility. Are you mixing the final dialogue and music? Just the music? Any Midi? Just dialogue? Surround Sound? Just make sure you can accept and deliver the required audio and video formats for your part of the project.Colin Mendez Morris

Hi Ray,
You need to get the fastest cpu you can afford. If not the Xeon-I would recommend an i7. (but you can also use the highest end multicore AMDs.) Your current setup may not be fast enough for 4K work, and you need Vegas 12-13 to handle some of the newer camera codecs. I have edited some 4K in Vegas 12 on a first generation i7 and it really taxes the whole system.Colin Mendez Morris
