You’ve got to face it, there are plenty of people who hate large corporations and their view is that if billions are made then something shady is going on (though this generally doesn’t keep them from shopping at Target if they can save a few bucks).
Frankly corps in America aren’t doing much to abrogate that image with government bailouts and crazy income inequality between CEOs and the rest of us.
I have to admit my own inclinations (backed by history) is not to trust the rich. Corporations are necessary, but I feel if they had their way we would be working 7-day; 120-hour work weeks for peanuts and spending more than we made each week at the company store.
But my own pinko sentiments aside, I just find it odd that so many that hate big business give Apple a pass.

I am curious, I have pretty much the same imac set-up which works fine with straight editing. However, since I have begun delving into AfterEffects over the last year I find it is often not enough machine when my effects start getting complicated. That is why I am looking to purchase more power.
Do you do a lot of effects compositing? I admit I am kind of green at this and may be doing something wrong. However, I am longing for something that takes more advantage of cuda and the mercury engine.

While I agree this may work with laptops, I still am not so sure it will work with “big iron” towers. And yes a lot of folks are lining up to buy the mbp (this always seems to happen with new apple products) it is the longevity of sales that matter — though I admit I think the MBP is going to be a big success. There are those that will always embrace the Apple model whatever it may be.
But, as this forum is an indicator, over the last couple of years Apple’s behavior has also caused a lot of formerly loyal users to jump ship or at least embrace cross-platform workflows.
However it plays out, I don’t think it will hurt Apple’s bottom line no matter if the Pro market rallies behind Apple or abandons it completely.

I think the fear is not so much in the laptop arena, but that Apple will start applying this model to their desktops. I mean does anyone really buy an imac or macpro with max ram from Apple? It is sooo much cheaper to get minimum ram and upgrade from a third party. Or also the idea that if a ram chip fails or some such you have to replace the whole motherboard.
The idea that someone would really spend like $8,000 for a tricked out Mac Pro that couldn’t be upgraded seems ludicrous. But maybe this isn’t the future of MAC desktops. We won’t really know until Apple plays its desktop cards 6 to 16 months from now.

Whatever form the new Mac Pro takes, my only prediction –if the new Mac Book Pro and FCPX are any indicators– is that it will both amaze and infuriate pros all at the same time.

The amazing thing is that Apple quietly released an update yesterday that with any other company would have clearly spelled the doom of a product. However, being the mysterious Apple, they released the update in such a WTF manner that folks are still trying like mad to
second guess them concerning the future of Mac Pro.I don’t know if that sort of marketing is pure genius or formulated by 12 monkeys let loose on the new Mac Book Pro.

Glad you started this thread, though I have to admit curtailing my apple-bashing might be a tad tough ’cause admittedly I am kind of pissed at them.
I have a very general question. My needs are very different from most on this board because I am a one-man operation that really doesn’t do much work for hire and doesn’t really make that much cash off of what I do. Price is a consideration for me.
So how cost effective is it to run cross platforms? I have been ready to upgrade my computer (from an imac ’27 i7 with 16 GB) to a more robust computer for about a year because I have been digging deeper into AfterEffects. I was seriously considering giving FCPX a run, but I don’t want to spend a bundle on the “new” macpro and I don’t want to wait a another year for a possible real upgrade.
So I guess I could keep the imac running and go with some sort of PC workstation. But my inclination is to choose either one system or the other and go with it because of costs.
So my question is –sorry for the long lead up– are there any other one-man operation guys out there that do operate cross platform? How costly is it to keep up with software for both systems? Is it really practical for someone like me?
