[Craig Seeman] “Looking at it, it’s not Xeon based. Not a workstation. Not something that would fit in Apple’s product line at the moment. Apple probably has their own solution in the works (or Intel) given the 2013 date given by Pogue. Apple still could have moved MacPro to Sandy Bridge Xeons and skipped Thunderbolt for the time being.”

And that I think this is the problem, the upgrade was so lame that it cannot be construed as anything but a diss. If nothing else they could have offered a drop in price across the board. Instead it’s as if Apple is forcing those locked into Mac hardware to pay a premium for 2-year-old technology.

I can’t see anybody else paying Mac prices for what the “updated” Mac Pro offers. It seems like greedy price gouging aimed at those that need new machines but aren’t able to make the change to PC as of yet.

And even if it is true that there is some super cool Mac Pro update in the wings for late 2013, it is like Apple is saying: “yes, in these fast moving modern times where innovation appear quickly and success is often determined fiscal quarter by fiscal quarter, you pros are important to us. We know you don’t mind waiting another year and a half for us to deliver what you need now. Besides, by then maybe we will also have updated FCPX enough to fit all your needs.”

  • [Phil Hoppes] “Sorry but they are telling you something. You just don’t like the message so you are not hearing it. To me it is a 150dB Klaxon…..”

I heard the message long ago. But “reliable” internet sources keep telling me I am wrong.

  • [Chris Harlan] “Clint, I just feel they’ve had a fat lady singing very, very loud for about three months, now. And the orchestra was tuning up for her for about three months before that.”

Yeah that may be, but there always seem to be folks in the audience (i.e. internet rumor mill) that is also singing a very loud chorus of conflicting tunes, drowning out, or at least muddling, the fat lady’s song.

I think with today’s lame update –which many are taking as a slap in the face– the fat lady may finally be singing loud enough to be clearly heard.

Still, there seem to be a few clinging to the desperate hope that this is just a bandaid to staunch the wound, while the “real” extra-cool Mac Pro super update is waiting in the wings.

  • Hope springs eternal, I guess. However, this “wait its going to come” postulating across the web is getting old.

Apple needs to bite the bullet–realize the secrecy bit is NOT working when it comes to the Pro line– and tell us something!

[Bret Williams] “Perhaps you should try using the native files. Why would you want to increase the drive space used and complicate the database. Sure it shouldn’t be a problem, but sounds like it is. If you’ve got to convert everything to ProRes, I feel like there isn’t much compelling reason to use X over legacy.”

One reason I convert everything to Prores is that I often edit stuff shot with different format cameras. I find that multimedia plays together much better if you wrap it in prores rather than try to edit say HDV and H264 on the same timeline. Maybe X handles suchlike better.

June 1, 2012 at 6:14 pm in reply to: Why do you think a new Mac Pro ISN’T coming?

[Craig Seeman] “I can’t wait to see Jonathan Ive’s small and cute MacPro replacement. I’ve glad you feel positively about the new form factor as well.”

I don’t know. I would kind of like to see big honking towers with lots of blinking lights and beeping noises. Maybe even a couple of cosmetic only reel-to-reels thrown in. A Mac Pro so massive in size I could design an entire room around it I am kind of retro that way.

[Daniel Frome] “Well was this ONE TIME… I’m waiting on this certain company to come out with the newest version of editing software and then it was like PUNKED! NO SOURCE MONITOR FOR YOU!”

Hmmmm, that sounds strangely familiar. This company must be pretty small and was just trying to save a few bucks by eliminating the source monitor. You have to cut a few corners when you are trying to compete with the likes of Apple…..oh wait, I get it.
