As you can probably tell from my use of a pixelvision camera, clarity of image isn’t nessisarily my first concern. Often I find shooting with the various camera gives me a certain feel (I also love to shoot with a JVC VHS camcorder because of its wonderfully smeary look).

My main concern is that the audio and other things in the timeline don’t go wildly out of synch or output in crazy ways. By the by, I always convert to 30fps.

It just kind of bugs me that FCPX makes these decisions on compression for me. But it really isn’t tha big of a deal, because I often rely on different apps to give me what I want (like Quicktime Pro and Compressor) before I use certain footage in FCP7.

In FCPX how well do native formats play together in a timeline that has say DV( which has been compressed from sources like betacam and pixelvision), XDCAM, HDV, and film files converted to Prores 422?

I do this quite often and in FCP7 I found it essential to convert these files to as common a codec as possible if I didn’t want to drive myself crazy. (I also found that Prores plays better in programs like Motion than HDV or DV).

Does PPRO and FCPX work better with mixed mediums?

I hope there is someway to over-ride the dimmed optimize media for certain formats that FCPX deems “the best workflow” is native.

I like to wrap everything in Prores because I often use multiple formats in the same timeline. Even if not, I guess it isn’t that big a deal. It is easy enough to wrap video into Prores via Quicktime Pro or other apps.

And this is what makes Apple’s tight-lipped stance so damned maddening. We have a multitude of reputible sources all saying different things about the fate of the mac pro.

I mean, I know Apple likes to wow us with sudden pronouncements of new hardware and software. And this may work for the iphone and ipad crowd.

But damn, I just wish Apple would at least say something about the mac pro. They don’t even have to go into detail. Just a simple “Yes, we are upgrading it or a no we are not but we have something new to take its place or no we are opting out of high-end boxes.”

[Tim Wilson] “Why are you Apple fans trying to convince me that Apple has given up on Mac Pros? I mean, we all know that its specs will be inferior to HP, ProMAX, et al LOL”

And this is one reason I think we are waiting with baited breath. When I purchased my imac 27 inch (moving from a G5 MacPro) it was fine for my needs. Every since I started delving into After Effects, I have been craving not only more power –even though I have the beefiest i7 imac with 16 gigs of ram — but the abilty to upgrade my graphics card to a higher-end Nvidia that takes advantage of CUDA and the mercury engine.

All-in-ones as they now stand will take you only so far. So I am hoping for an upgraded Mac Pro or something comparable with some real juice. If not, I will do the unthinkable and purchase a non-mac for my next computer. I have waited to see how Apple is jumping on this Mac Pro thing, but I can only wait so long (it seems like forever).

That is why Apple’s secretive ways are so maddening at times. I’m not really sure how to proceed.

I think a lot of it is because Apple is always so damned tight-lipped about such things. Another reason people fear that the Mac Pro may not be coming is a perception (right or wrong) that idevices are sooo profitable and high-end boxes are not, that Apple is going to dump the line because it doesn’t satisfy their bottom line requirements.

When a company is as secretive as Apple, rumors are naturally going to spread.

    LOL! Good words of wisdom.

Yeah, and I’m not sure how much things have really improved. Sometimes when I am working on my imac 27in it gets so hot I could fry eggs on it. I have two external fans that I often engage to cool the damned thing down.

[Andy Neil] “Precision editing could be improved in secondary storylines. The precision editor itself only opens in the primary so if you like trimming that way, secondaries are more difficult. However, trim tools and tops and tails all work perfectly fine which is how I trim anyway. Although I’d like the 2-up monitor to be active whenever I’m using the trim tool whether I’m dragging or using keyboard shortcuts.

Also, I would like a keyboard shortcut to toggle between primary and secondary storylines; that would help quite a bit.

But to answer your second question, it’s easy to trim video in the primary to the beat of a song in a secondary.

    Andy”

    Cool, thanks Andy.

  • [Erik Lundberg] “Which in turn will eventually lead to the scary point when I’m supposed to be the one who should know stuff”

A tip — just tell stories of how hard it was in the old days. Things like: “When I began we had to cut silver nitrate film on a Steenbeck. The stuff was so flammable, we would have one editor burst into flames every month. You young whippersnappers have it so easy with your new fangled cellulose acetate film, computer do-hickeys and fire-retardant work spaces. You punks wouldn’t know full coat from adam with your fancy DAT thingamajigs.”
