  • I simply am looking for someone to tell me the glossary definition of the following lenses;

    24mm
    28mm
    50mm
    85mm
    105mm
    135mm
    80-200mm zoom

    If not for all, ones favorite? If one had to buy only 2 for a feature which ones, which ones would they be? Or if it had to be three then so be it. Please help.

    I simply dont want to end up buying a 135mm and a 105mm for a film shot mostly indoors, so perhaps one can clear up the different options available.

    What is ones favorites, and why for certain shots.

    note: I am shooting for a film look on HD.

    And thanks Todd for the great detailed response. I know that cinematography is an art of its own and should really dive into it as you suggest as I have done with directing so far. I dont have experience at all as a cinematographer, only as a operator, though I would like to take the role of both now. I am simply trying to be a great cinematographer and I guess your right, there is no definition of what a 28mm lens, and a 100mm lens would do for you, but I still want a rough idea, as I need to make a purchase soon so I can start experimenting, no time to read books or classes unfortunatley. I just thought some one could bring their “library” and field expertise to the forum, hense the purpose of the forums, but if no professionals can recommend certain lenses for certain shots, then diving into the art is what I shall do it will be the best way to learn Im sure, and Im quite excited cant wait. Though I still need a recommendation for 2 lens purchases.

    But thats just the great thing about the cow. Pride will never overtake our (artists) doubts, and urge to ask simple questions. Sometimes the most stupid questions gives great insight. Sometimes us as professionals are too knowledgable for our own good, and it requires an idiots perspective to solve such problems. Also some of us work best under pressure, and not knowing how to do something before we actually commit, is part of the fun! We could stay up til 5 in the morning figuring something out. That just proves how dedicated we are, and shows how much we want to keep growing. Having enough confidence in ourselves enables us to commit to such uncharted waters (tasks and projects), and we know, that we would not commit if we think we can fail. Failure does not exist in our vocabulary and therefore, once presented with an opportunity, we are not going to say email “Email the work order to my sister, shes better.” Hopefully you learned that we are not the average joe playing doctor as you mentioned, we are doctors, and our beepers go off all day not knowing what will await us.

    Okay, heres some more info…

    I want to know how much DVD art designers for like Pixar/Disney earn, to do menus, etc, and how much guys like me earn with smaller movies. Should I be asking for $35 an hour whereas the big shots are earning $50 an hour. Iwould just like a rate sheet so I could establish myself as a freelance designer.

  • Well this is for freelance gigs from post companys. $25 is too cheap per hour? What do you think I could charge per hour, I dont wan to offend the company and ruin the relationship if I bid too high. Can you recommend a rate for me? $35, $50 per hour? I know entry level is $15, but dont know the high end of the curve. I know I am leaning towards the high end, but dont want to bid too high. So can you just give like a number estimate what you think I am worth so I could get a rough idea. How much do the disney, pixar authorers, menu designers earn, and compared to guys like me with smaller clients.
