Just off the top of my head I’d suggest exporting your XDCAM file, then using Clip Browser to make two independent subclips. You can select the clip in an Explorer window and under the File menu, select “New clip using In/Out section”. Overlap by a second or two just to be safe, and put the new clips on the SxS cards. A simple edit can reassemble them down the road.
I’ve never done this, but it seems the most straightforward method to accomplish what you want to do.

More importantly, get it from a place you can trust. Since there aren’t any big shops here in central North Dakota I can visit, I stick with B&H. Those gray market places can’t be trusted, and any money you might save on the purchase price may well be paid in heartache later.

We bought ours through B&H as part of their EX-1 accessory kit. The warranty arrived in the form of a certificate from Sony, which we then registered online to activate the factory Sony extended warranty.
Check out this link. It seemed reasonably priced to me. We did the same deal with our EX3 when we ordered it.

True, but the idea is to keep the camera free so that it’s not taken out of commission by the need to download footage.

No, they don’t work with my Sony reader. Despite the good reports that some have had here on the Cow, there’s no way I’m trusting them on the kind of shoot that involves travel and lots of file transfers in the field. I’m sure the MxR is a good product, and I own two, but I’m still in the “cautious” camp regarding their use for critical shoots. This weekend I plan to take a Steadicam vest rig out with one of our EX cameras to play, and I’ll probably run the two MxR adapters to see how things work.
I understand the appeal of cheap media, but I consider the cost of SxS cards as part of the “cost of entry” into the HD game. I’ve only been in broadcasting and/or production since 1988 or so, but in that time the word “adapter” has become a word that throws up a red flag in my mind. I’d rather not ruin a shoot costing thousands of dollars, involving lots of travel, and/or without a second chance…just to save on the cost of cards.

Wouldn’t it be interesting if someone was able to rent this camera, check the serial number, and then turn it over to you and/or the police?

I haven’t messed around with SP mode at all, to be honest. Is this on a PC or a Mac?
The two apps have distinctly different purposes. I use Clip Browser for folder management and XDCAM Transfer for everything else (playback and review, marking subclips, etc).

Never plug a card reader into your keyboard’s USB port if it has one – you never know what you’ll get. Most likely USB-1, at least on older equipment. On my Mac keyboard it also pops up an error saying that the port doesn’t provide power to the reader, it’s only a data connection.

I agree. But after waiting and waiting for that PDW-U1 software that was supposedly right around the corner forever, I wouldn’t hold my breath on Snow Leopard any time soon.
