Interesting marketing strategy by Apple, to send it out to these two guys and have them generate short videos. I am close to buying a new iMac, but don’t foresee needing to edit 8k or Red Raw in the next few years, so I will probably just load up a new iMac.
I have followed the Hack-Intosh arguments recently, but for the not so vast unwashed masses, the iMacPro will probably meet the requirements of many editors.

Very interesting article and great insight about creating video for the web, (Youtube).
“Nothing really prepares you for the experience of suddenly having “an audience” on the Internet. The experience is different for every person, but I suspect the two major feelings are the same: there’s that initial dopamine rush of “Oh my God somebody likes me” followed by that creeping fear of “I better not f* this up.””
It was also interesting to read how they learned to work within the copyright and Youtube restrictions on content.
Fortunately, although they have moved on, their work remains available.

December 2, 2017 at 8:37 pm in reply to: FCP X on tour with The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, etc.Incredible to see what can be done with a two man team on tour. Interesting that they get the clips out to social media in time to beat the iphone uploads and they are shooting in 4k or above. Professional is almost not a strong enough description.

Every time I look at a new camera on B&H (which is frequently) , an add for it jumps up on my Facebook page within a few minutes. At least it isn’t fake news from a Russian Bot.

I have a mid 11 27″ iMac with 24 GB of ram. I was trying to use compressor with FCPX still running and it virtually stopped. Now I close FCPX and everything else and compressor cranks along. So I think you are right that it is a memory issue. Turn on the activity monitor and it will indicate how much memory is being used.
I am planning to get a new “loaded” iMac. Should I plan on adding 64 MB of RAM (after market of course)? I expect to be using 4k in the future.

For a one man team, I think the production values are quite good. From a technical FCPX point of view, it looks solid. From a viewers point of view, I thought the dialog was very repetitive and became boring. If I were the editor and had a free hand, I would have the dialog transcribed, them make a paper edit of the dialog and pick out the key statements and assemble it. It might be half as long and twice as interesting. If you could film the car going past the camera or the car from another car that would spice it up visually. Also recording how the car sound outside the cabin would add something or record what it sounds like when it starts up.
Some years ago, I did a video about my Mustang. Not as high production values as yours, but Youtube users seem to like it. It is called Crush or Restore – A 65 Mustang Story. https://youtu.be/zrmH2WyfCaISome contents or functionalities here are not available due to your cookie preferences! This happens because the functionality/content marked as “Google Youtube” uses cookies that you choosed to keep disabled. It is very impressive to see these expert editors use FCPX efficiently and with so much power, especially without invoking the sometimes tiresome argument as to whether it is better than PP or AVID. On the other hand, it illustrates how little of the power of FCPX, I use at the moment. Very inspirational.

That is really helpful in understanding dealing with 4k and the Sony formats. I am close to buying a Canon XF-400 and will be faced with similar decisions since it also can do 4k and some form of XAVC.

Those of us that don’t qualify as a mad scientist, at least in the universe of codecs and compression, what is a mezzanine format and what can it do for us?

October 27, 2017 at 10:50 pm in reply to: FCP: One or multiple libraries for Doc? looking for best solution.I use a single library. You can use multiple events for different parts of the doc. Keywording and smart collections can also be used to segregate your media. I agree, dragging across libraries is a drag.
