Thanks for the answers. I was amazed that cmd option arrow down did just what I was wishing for. I was worried that the connected audio clips would be affected or moved, but it worked perfectly. There is so much still to learn ( and remember) in FCPX.

FCPX works well with h.264 1080 on my mid 11 iMac 27 inch with I5 chip. It saves me a lot of disk space over FCP7 which had to transcode and increased storage by about a factor of 8. Of course, it took me some time to get up to speed. Now there are a lot of great tutorials.

I agree with you. One other thing is to record small segments, load them onto your hard drive. If Quicktime Player will open them it will give the codec and the bit rate. Although I think you already have the answer about the AVCHD 60P.

It is not obvious that MP4 would be lower quality. Does the camera manual tell the bit rate for each? My Canon XA20 can do either and both are H.264 and same bit rate. They look the same in FCPX. Using MP4 the Canon has more options, like undercranking and true overcranking.

Always something new to learn about FCPX (viewer setting). So if it had been shot at 60p, the adjacent frames would show 3 blades, but shifted by 60 degrees. Not sure how the playback on FCPX and a compressed version to 30 p (typical for Youtube) would look, I am guessing during play back it would like like 6 blades. Reminds me of the stage coach wheels in old movies that would appear to rotate backwards.

Thanks for all the great advice. I am leaning toward getting what is called Pro 2K scan (1556 lines) which should capture essentially all of the 16 mm resolution, then have the film lab output at 1080 p ProRes. For $400 more and a bigger hard drive they could add a copy in DXP format, but not sure the client will go for that and I am guessing none of this will ever be headed for the big screen.

Soccer–Too much of a collective sport. No quarterback controlled by the coach. Americans like a dominant player (quarterback or pitcher or point guard).
I watched my son play soccer for years and tried to love it. Then he played a real American game-LACROSSE. Now that is fun to watch and even more fun to play and as someone said, The players get to wear a hat and hit each other with 6 foot long sticks.
Maybe someday it will achieve some status in the US sports scene. In the meantime, it is a challenge to film because the ball is small and it is the fastest game on two feet.

I have seen that on digitized VCR video as well. Why not enlarge the clip just enough to push the noise at the top and bottom out of the frame?

I just did one for CAL’s memorial stadium Jumbotron. You can always set the data rate using Compressor. In my case I used H.264 and 1280 by 720 30 fps and 5 kps. More or less standard for exporting to Vimeo.

I looked at a couple of videos that were listed as 59.54 p and you are correct sir! They were compressed to 720 p and are interpreted by the inspector at 59.94 p. Does that imply the playback frame rate is actually 59.94 p? These started out as what Canon calls 59.94i at 1080 resolution. Just to make things confusing the camera can shoot at a “shooting” frame rate of 59.94P and play back at 29.97P for overcranking by a factor of 2 or even 59.94 P shooting and 23.98 P playback for an overcranking rate of 5 to 2.
