I use a Canon XA20 and it shoots 59.94p (interlaced) When I compress and send to Vimeo, I get the message that the frame rate is 59.94 and should be 30 p. Quicktime has no problem and it plays correctly, but I haven’t figured out how to “relabel” or compress it to fix this. Frankly calling it 59.94p is confusing. In the past it was called 1080i.

I am using a Lacie 2 Big (6 TB, Thurnderbolt) in Raid 0 configuration for about 3 months. Seems to work well and I back up onto both firewire 800and USB disks at night. So far so good. The transfer rate on the LACIE is much faster than FW800 and very useful in FCPX.

I have a Canon XA-20 that offers all those different formats. When I shoot 28 Mbps AVCHD Canon camera calls it 59.4 p.but then in the manual they describe it is 59.94 field per second interlaced. FCPX interprets it as 1920 by 1080 59.94 P. Slightly confusing. They say at 28 Mbps this will not be able to go directly to blu-ray.
Anyway, my first approach would be to use Compressor with Create DVD, MPEG-2 for DVD, for going to a DVD. I have made DVD’s this way in the past and they don’t have unusual pixelation or other problems.

I only compress as the final step, if the destination is the web or some other format. If I understand correctly that is a necessary step, but maybe I am missing something.

I think anything with motion files takes a long time to compress. I do sports videos and using a two pass compressor seems to give much smoother motion on playback than a single pass.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I think the suggestion to do one quarter long clips might work fairly well. For these games, the camera men are often far apart since while one is filming from a high central position the second one may be down on the field. Maybe using multicam is over kill since unlike musician playing a song or a concert, the action is very much stop and go with many cuts where time is not truly conserved. In the end the goal is something like the short stories Sport Center puts together or even like the old NFL Films.
I am also thinking about using a primary and secondary story line.

I think if you trash an event, it actually ends up in the in the system trash. I had some problems because I had a file in an event that was damaged. I had to trash the event and then empty the system trash. Eventually it went away.

I use compressor prior to uploading to either Youtube or Vimeo and like to be able to set bit rate. Still uncertain what the best choices are, because it is hard to tell what happens after Youtube works it over and different users have wildly different internet download speeds.

My Lacie 2 Big (6 T) (RAID 0)running Thunderbolt on a mid 11 iMac clocks in at read and write speed of about 360 MB/s according to Blackmagic Disk Speed Test App. I am not sure how fast it is in real time transfers, but I found the speed test app a reasonably accurate predictor when working with FW800 and USB 2. Obviously, it is benefiting from the RAID 0 configuration.

Fortunately, Super Duper refused to copy the offending clip and identied which one it was. Turns out it was a 26 minute long single shot about 5 gig bytes long. Whether the file size caused the problem is unclear.
