“Tiger” OS itself has nothing to do with popups. Have you set your Safari (or Firefox) browser’s preference to “Block popup windows?” The browsers’ blockers get most of them, but there are a few popups/popunders that do manage to evade interception.

But, this statement from that document:
“…You cannot define keyboard shortcuts for general purpose tasks such as opening an application or switching between applications.”

Which is what the OP wants to do.

June 16, 2005 at 7:58 pm in reply to: Is Avid appropriate for graphic-intensive shows?

I realize you’re talking “pilot” presentation, but, is the concept for the actual show to do all of this as time and render-intensive post-production layering? If the show is of time-sensitive content, wouldn’t you/they want to add in as much of this material as possible in the production phase, with a multi-ME switcher? You wouldn’t need to include everything, leaving option for last minute additions, but it seems like the less you have to do in post, the quicker you could turn the finished show around.

  • I’ve done a number of them, and unless the production is planned in advance for accomodating a non-English track, it is never easy or fun. For an after-the-fact Spanish track, I’ve usually (after copying the original sequence) laid out the Spanish narration on a new track, keeping the English around for reference and pacing. Once the Spanish track is laid out, I’ve hacked away at the timeline, moving video and English, as you note, to the right. Usually end up with a timeline that’s about 50 to 60 percent longer, now filled with long black holes. Having even some small amount of Spanish language knowledge helps a lot, as it’s much easier to line up the video and English narration pieces to proper starts and stops in the Spanish. Yes, you’ll have to go back to original scenes to grab more video, maybe more b-roll, maybe freeze frames to fill out the time. Yes, it will take forever.
On some jobs. we had a really good Spanish speaking V/O talent who helped out tremendously, both in speeding up his already fast reads, but also, knowing our situation, offered paraphrased, simpler expressions for many things. Often an idiomatic spoken expression works a lot better and is shorter than a direct translation or transliteration from a written English script. Our producer, on subsequent projects for same client (HR Dept training), made sure to shoot added scenes and longer alternates for use in Spanish versions.

It’s all moot if a particular .avi used a codec for which there is not or never was a Mac version.

June 8, 2005 at 1:53 am in reply to: Invoices

Most word processing and “Works”-type programs have invoice sample templates available to fill in the blanks
Simple form, Your Name, address, phone; Client’s Name, address; job date(s), work performed; hours worked or
Day/half-day depending on arrangement with client; rate per above units; total.
Don’t print your Social Security number on an invoice form. If a client needs it for issuing you a 1099, provide it to them
at their office. I’ve always added “Net 30” but, as noted earlier, it usually is treated as a fun suggestion.
Seems like the worst slow-pay offenders, for me at least, have been either very large companies that make tons of money, or,
agencies/production companies who do work for those just mentioned, and say they can’t pay me until MegaCorp pays them.

  • Basically, everything’s in your User directory.

    IE Favorites ~/Library/Preferences/Explorer/Favorites.html
    Safari ~/Library/Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Various “Internet” settings in ~/Library/Preferences as different .plist files

May 29, 2005 at 4:45 am in reply to: Impact Font missing on reinstall

See if a CMD-F search for the Impact font shows it hiding somewhere; use the Typebook app and it may show up as being on the drive but not installed in a /Library/Fonts directory. If it does appear in TypeBook’s list, you may just need to use the “install” button to reactivate it.
