I started the pad and paper thing earlier this week. What I worried about was clients asking how could I take so long on a project and me having to prove or show why it took as long as it did. But when you think about it, there is no real way to prove unless you are an honest person. I have quickbooks and would love to use it, but I have no idea how to set it up still.

As a matter of fact, I am shooting a wedding today with the XL2. But for my weddings, I will only do dual camera. It just makes the product that much better, plus helps to cover any boo boo’s. I just bought the XL2 about 2 months ago and I am very happy with it. Your concern for lighting is true though. But it is true with just about every camera. Camera’s need light. What I do is when I get all the information from the client. I call the reception hall and ask to stop by so I can meet with them. I bring the camera and tape thier lighting to get an idea quick and ask them if we could have it up more or less or if it’s fine. I also stay at the reception for only three hours because people like the light low and plus you can only tape so much dancing.

Steve I did set the time and date…I have used the 24p and that has imported great, this just kept on going over the same stuff again and again. I stopped the batch capture and skipped one of the clips, then imported the rest and i guess it worked. But then I went back to the one i skipped and it imported fine. Kinda crazy, hopefully i’ll figure it out. Any more advise would be great.

In my years of editing on FCP, we had two power mac’s with the same fcp code placed on them. The only problem is when they are both connected to the same internet router then the second person launching FCP will be kicked off. So depending on what was needed to be done, one person would have to unhook from the internet/network while the other did what they needed to do. Hope it makes sense.

Thanks for all the advise folks! Just know I am not giving up on this, I may have to put it on the back burner longer than I wanted and maybe start talking with places now and set it up for next spring/summer. But giving up is not really an option for me. Thanks again!

Thanks for all the info. If I were to send out the tapes for CC though and espically for the cost as well, for just the 12-24 shows I do I would have spent that in the CC sofware. That’s why this is a pain for me. Because after all is said and done that is what I was expecting to make from the show. So if I were to do the show then I would be breaking even. And I was hoping to pay off all of this new equipment I bought. I guess I will have to wait and plan this out more. Thanks for all the help and guidance.

Oh one other question instead of writing another whole new post:
How does one advertise for thier business? I was hoping to do the show and that would advertise the business and show are work at the same time. But since that looks like it is on hold. How does everyone else get new clients? Do you create your own commercials or what?

If you are looking for documentry type equipment for broadcast and such, totally stay away from what are on the shelf’s at best buy and circuit city. Some will say HD and such but I find that if HD is the way you are going and you want this for pod cast and broadcast then invest that little bit extra because the quality is totally worth it. Many cams now have the option of HD or SD which is nice to have. I myself have just bought a Canon XL2 (just SD) and it is used. According to the person I bought it from, there are low hrs on it and it’s coming with a 3x lens. I have used one before for a shoot which is part of the reason I decided on a canon (also because it shoot in 24p) I like how the camera worked and I understand it that you can use this camera to control a great deal of things or put it all on auto and it will pretty much take care of it’s self. I did notice though that the color on the canon came out much better than it did on my new sony hdr-fx1. Color correction took care of it, but as always the less you have to do the better the product is sometimes. So for a Cannon reccomendation I would go with that. As for used or new; it’s always better to buy new cause you know what the camera has gone through. I bought a used and it’s a gamble on my part but I didn’t have the funds for a new one. But if you can, buy new! I hope this helps, sorry for the length.

That is kinda hard to let you know what you should buy. Can you explain a little bit more cause I know everyone is willing to give thier opinion on a purchase matter. You should let us know like is this just a small project and after let’s say a year or so you only want the camera, or is it something you hope is going to grow and so you hope to buy a camera that will last for a long time? Also are you looing into HD or is SD? Also how much expierance do you have with video camera’s. Do you want total control or do you want the camera to handle more of the control’s? I’ve been working in tv for 5 years now and just last year started my own production company and for me sadly for now it comes to what I can spend; then I look for the best in that price range. And the best way to get any info on any camera pretty much is what you found already which is the COW. So please give us as much info as you can so we can help you.
