I find HDV m2t files a pain to work with. I use the stand alone Cineform Connect HD software which as you digitize will convert the incoming files in real-time to Cineform Intermediate AVIs. You have a choice of intermediate file specs to choose from. Basically good, better and best with different file sizes. The quality is outstanding with the Cineform codec. If your PC isn’t fast enough to convert in real-time you can also convert already digized m2t files with it. Vegas does actually come with the Cineform codec which under ‘render as’ can be selected to convert your existing m2t files to the Cineform codec. Way better than m2t files to edit with at any time, hence Sony including it with Vegas!
Once you have the Cineform files you can open them in Virtual Dub and under ‘filters’ hit the add button choose ‘deinterlace’. Under the deinterlace menu you have seven options to choose from, the top one ‘blend fields’ useually proves to be the best. Do a Google on VirtualDub it’s a free download, under the GNU licence I seem to recall. BTW VirtualDub won’t handle m2t files should you want to ask. Good luck.

Understand the frustration. I tried the EX convert to MXF with clip browser but can only access the 500mb ‘general’ folder with them. Yet with XDCam PDW-330/350 formatted discs I can back-up 1440 x 1080 35mbit MXF files with no problem and in doing so access the full extent of the ‘clips’ folder on the discs. I can archive finished 1440 x 1080 MXF edited files to disc no problem. It must be something to do with the PDW files being 1440 x 1080.
Hope they come out with the unlimited ‘general’ folder firmware/software sooner than later with the ability to back-up the 1920 x 1080 MXF files. Amazes me that this capability was around from the start with the PDW ‘clip’ folder files but wasn’t implemented for EX with the release of the EX-1 when it was screamingly obvious that this was going to be an ideal EX-1/3 back-up/archive workflow.

If it is Vegas 8.0c try droping the ram preview to the default of 128 or less and set back to 4 threads and in the project media dock click on the lightening bolt icon, top left icon in your project media bin. Try rendering again.

Capturing with Scenalyzer on Vista here fine. Had no problems. Can only confirm it works so can’t offer any suggestions. Are you sure you can see the Microsoft DV Device in the drop-down menu below the VTR controls in Scenalyzer?

A Quick work around which will last for two weeks, unless you buy it! Download the trial version of Edius 5.0 which has full support for EX files.
Bang your files on the timeline and use ‘export’ and choose what file flavor you want on export. Anything from uncompressed to DV. Canopus Edius’ codec engine is about the fastest software converter around, better than real-time on a reasonable PC. It will also give you good conversion results.

A locked icon is most likely your problem, give the following steps a run-through. In the Pan & Crop window the bottom tool on the left panel, the X-Y movement direction icon, will most likely be showing a double headed arrow with the arrows pointing up-down. Click on this vertical arrow icon and it will show a cross with arrow heads. The cross arrow selection allows free form movement of the pan/crop window. A double headed vertical arrow showing only allows up-down movement. Click again and a double headed horizontal arrow should appear which will allow you only left-right movement. Easy one to get caught on!

Try setting you project properties to ‘best’ and on the timeline set your clip properties to ‘reduce interlace flicker’, under right click menu ‘switches’ . Render out sixty seconds or so and see if this fixes the problem. Most likely it will.

We did a lot of work on the 1/2″ XDCam HDs when they came out because we didn’t much like what we were getting out of them. I came up with the settings listed below after much testing to make sure that they were objectivly correct from a broadcast technical POV and that subjectivly the camera output looked good. After originally posting these settings on the xdcam.com.au group we got heaps of emails back from all over the globe from shooters who liked the changes. These settings were developed for for 50i but I know 60i shooters who use them so who knows they might work for you!
To save typing for ages the following list has the menu heading and the setting values only and should be easy enough to follow. I am only listing the menus that have a bearing on the final results. Before you start SAVE ANY SCENE FILE YOU HAVE LOADED, as you will lose it. Start with Menu A51 and recall a STANDARD SCENE FILE as a starting point. Now follow the rest. Remember these settings are for use with the DCC in the ‘ON’ position.

If you do use it give it a name and remember to save it under Menu A63 or A64 (depending on software/firmware version), ALL FILE, NOT A62/A63, USER FILE. THIS IS IMPORTANT, AS ‘ALL FILE’ WILL SAVE EVERY CHANGE MADE.

Well still haven’t resolved the problem with mp4 Main Concept sync problems out of Vegas 8 but found an external solution. Puts out very nice mp4s plus a range of other configurable exports such as:

MPG (Mpeg1, Mpeg2, Mpeg4, Mpeg VCD/SVCD/DVD)

I really am losing the plot here. It was the early hours of the morning when I posted, a senior moment or blame brain fade as Ron Shook would say. It’s not Quicktime I am having the problem with but the Main Concept MP4 H264 export, these are the exports losing audio sync. Any ideas?
