if you can’t reshoot, you can still get excellant results by using a track matte in conjuntion with primatte.

Here’s my test of your pic and instructions…

1. new comp “see” and drop in man.jpg
2. new adjustment layer above man.jpg
3. duplicate adj layer (CTRL + D) above man.jpg and set track matte to
luma inverted matte
4. add difference matte to dup adj layer
5. diff layer setting set to man.jpg and man.jpg trackmat to luma inverted matte and man.jpg only layer in “see” comp visible
6. set difference layer to remove blue wall
7. create new comp final
9. add “see” into final comp
9. add man.jpg with primatte keyer underneath

The diff luma matte will make filling in hole and texture look fantastic. Hope this helps.

even hollywood movies, in mpeg2 encodes for dvd-9 disks, are software flagged for 3:2 pulldown. Why? because TV’s only understands fields. even blue-ray is fields upper. You think that’s crazy, when you watch a hollywood movie, you aren’t even seeing 24 fps, you’re seeing the lowly 23.976 all garbled up into repeating fields. ewww.

reelsmart motion blur AE plugin will work with non-moving layers. It analyzes the pixels shifting and applies appropiate definable blur.

if, and I stress if, they want progressive for some reason, they should know that algolith is still the best but you have to buy a hardware card instead of a plugin.

another method is use monet to roto mask the actor from the background, then you are free to do w/e you want with effects like cylinder effect, then when you add person again, they will automatically overlay the effect perfectly.

1. Adobe Illustrator extrude rectangle, then import into AE
2. Cinema 4d extrude
3. Maya extrude
4. no plugins or software, use a Null object, set 6 solids to rect. shape, then parent Null to layer transform with pick whip.

sounds like your GIF uses really high quality. Using a real software program, it will encode size to what you want while maintaining good results. ulead’s gif animator for one.

to capture VHS, you don’t need uncompressed. You can use light compression like mpeg2000. just capture 640×480 interlaced fields upper because if you capture 320×240, the fields will be too small to separate with a deinterlacer. If you want perfect deinterlacing, use algolith, next best is fieldskit, then red giant.
