I have a quick question. I am working on a long project transferring, editing and color correcting some old VHS tapes, before I toss it into Premier and Encore. The problem I am running into is the uncompressed file is to large for my disk space, I know that Premeir will compress the data into a smaller file, but getting it from AE to Premier is the problem. AM I stuck getting a multi Terabyte HD??

    Thanks for the help!

Hey Dave! Thanks for getting back to me. I’m using a Canopus ADVC300 video transfer device, and yes, i capture it in Premier. I take it over to AE for the deinterlacing, noise removal and color correction. I am using the Magic Bullets: Frames from Red Giant for the deinterlacing (it works really good too).

How much of this can I do in Premier??

    Thanks agin…

    Stephen

to capture VHS, you don’t need uncompressed. You can use light compression like mpeg2000. just capture 640×480 interlaced fields upper because if you capture 320×240, the fields will be too small to separate with a deinterlacer. If you want perfect deinterlacing, use algolith, next best is fieldskit, then red giant.

[Chris Wright] “If you want perfect deinterlacing, use algolith

Algolith is out of the plug-ins business and no longer sells their tools. Also, their licensing scheme was such that you can’t buy someone’s old license and transfer it to another machine — so buying a used copy is out of the question.

Algolith was incredible but was also incredibly slow and expensive and the company was pretty lax on customer support, in my experience. I think these factors put the final nail in their coffin.

Fieldskit is the best at this point.

if, and I stress if, they want progressive for some reason, they should know that algolith is still the best but you have to buy a hardware card instead of a plugin.

Does Algolith still offer it, Chris?

    Just curious.

Like you, I thought that Algolith was amazing. When I first saw it many years ago at NAB, I was so blown away that I spent quite a lot of time around their booth and brought many COW leaders by their booth to see it.

Why deinterlacing? Eveyrone I’ve talked to says that when converting video to DV / DVD / progressive scan, to deinterlace and make the upper and lower fields into one frame. My understanding is that it will play more smoothly and look cleaner on DVD when played on a TV. And this is especially crucial when converting video to HDV or Blue Ray disk.

    What’s your take??

even hollywood movies, in mpeg2 encodes for dvd-9 disks, are software flagged for 3:2 pulldown. Why? because TV’s only understands fields. even blue-ray is fields upper. You think that’s crazy, when you watch a hollywood movie, you aren’t even seeing 24 fps, you’re seeing the lowly 23.976 all garbled up into repeating fields. ewww.
