is he trying to match the 16-235 pixel values? because a pure conversion to yuv is just data transform with a small error not a pixel value change.

some people force 255 to 235/16 with the levels effect to match other editing programs.

“greyscale matte where white equals lots of movement and black equals no movement.”

timewarp which comes with ae has a motion blur setting. just leave it at speed 100 for time and turn on shutter angle 2000. shutter samples makes it smoother. shutter angle makes it bigger.
then set as difference matte to original footage and add adjustment with a saturation -100. it should create a greyscale map of motion.

most likely the original footage is flickery too. most 18fps is not in pristine condition anyway. try this ae template i wrote a while back. I have used it on public domain footage that has completely horrible flickering and it makes it perfect.

if you enable the text layer and scroll Gamma Clamp at gamma*10 so that the text box reads 25, it will fix timelapse and old movie’s flicker and white balance

this post might be too late, but consider Infognition’s super-resolution to upscale. It uses ajoining frames to get better quality than you could alone.

also in AE, if you select preserve details, the deinterlace may look better

Reduce Interlace Flicker just blur small details, doesn’t deinterlace.

you render out AE with fields off to deinterlace. and make sure that interpret fields for video is uppper/lower/pulldown correctly first.

if you want higher quality, I recommend plugins that preserver detail better than the default adobe settings.

a little off topic, i apologize.

maybe you can figure out why its latitude is no better than the gh3.
the blackmagic is going to crush it. gh4 isn’t even RAW, ack!

  • 1. pixel aspect correction button is off in AE or interpret is wrong in
    project.

    2. try a still image sequence with no effects. that will eliminate any codec variables/image degradation possibilities

if the camera was on a tripod, you could duplicate the footage and create a clean plate by shifting the duplicate layer’s inpoint in a few seconds where the actor wasn’t there before, then simply animate the opacity for them to fade out. use that as an alpha matte difference layer transfer mode to drive an effect of smoke. no roto. 5 min. done. grab a coffee.
