  • Emery,

Well, let’s leave that up to me, OK? If the S-video port is uncompressed, I might do a live switch between two cameras, feed into a DV deck and then I will have only used the DV crunch ONE time instead of TWO. S-video is not the worst thing in the world for budget production. Multiple DV compressions is.

I was asking a question to my peers here in this thread and it appears that they do not know the answer. Its not a common question. But I do need an answer. Any suggestions?

  • Is that right? The S-video output of the DVX-100 is not compressed by the DV codec? Really? What about Sony cameras like the VX-2000/2100 or the PD-150/170?

If that is so, then great. I would love to have that in my mental toolkit. But can I get some kind of unanimous “yes” here? I’ve just never heard this before. Can I reliably tell a producer this tomorrow, even about the Sony cams?

  • And up that RAM!

  • Yes, im familiar with the Kona and BM cards. I was wandering about software methods. I think the new version of Compressor coming out might do the trick.

  • Thanks for the good info, I just met the FCP team from Apple last night. They said the new version of Compressor coming with FCP5 would do “very high-end” conversions, both format like PAL to NTSC and HD down or up conversion. this was sort of an acknowledgment that it was not “High-end” before. They were very proud of the new conversion tool and mentioned it a number of times to make sure we understood that it was completely different now.

Yes, let’s hear some reports of performance with FCP 4.5 and Tiger.

Jan of Panasonic ruled out the use of an off the shelf hard drive in an early morning post to an older thread last Sunday. She said the drive would have to be a “smart drive” like the FireStore, and that Pnasonic was a partner with the company that makes FireStore and was actively working with them right now.

Now, that doesn’t mean there wont be some kind of P2 card/hard drive hack by some adventuresome teen in a cramped Tokyo apartment at some point, who knows…. In the meantime, I would start saving more than a thousand dollars for some kind of FireStore device and think about where your going to put it. Iits gonna be a belt holster for me, although I thought about using a bandana to strap it to my forehead. Maybe it will come in colors to match an iPod mini?

It would be good to see this conversation continue. Please write back with more info as you find it.

Remember Jan has confirmed this week that they ARE working with FireStore and that a “smart” external hard drive would work with the HVX.

I’m going to tell a producer here that I think there is a 90% chance of alternative (cheaper and longer) capture technology for HVX this coming winter. What do you think?

Remember to look for fast moving, hand held footage in the coming samples. HDV already does pretty nice looking tripod shots. Still shots, slow pans and zooms wont tell us why we should buy the camera over the HDV options.
