Hey Bob – I’m using a SATA array from MacGurus. I bought my drives online (sata seagate 500gb) $270/drive and a sonnett x4 sata control card for around 250. The “build your own” drives were very easy to assemble (5 bay utilizes the port multiplier hub to it’s max – 1 cable from your tower to your card – leaving 3 open slots for 3 more towers) right now I get about 230mbs second through 90 percent of the drives. If you want to upgrade later on, you can buy 2 new 5 bay towers with drives – stripe them together and get around 450mb/sec sustained. Rick is the owner and took my calls immediately when I had a glitch. It was just a cable that needed to be trimmed and the drives have worked flawlessly with my m1008.2.2 OS10.3.9 MacG4Dual 1.4 I can’t recommend them enough for their customer service and product knowledge. Kind Regards, Chris
The 5 bay is definitely the way to go. The port multiplier technology allows 5 drives per – and so an eight bay drive wastes the possibility of 2 drives (total 10)by utilizing only 4 drives per port multiplier port. (Like 10 hotdogs in a pack but only 8 buns per pack – wacky huh? (Someday they’ll figure out the 10 bay deal) I went with the build it yourself Macguru’s to save a little money – I liked the options of their cheap extra drive tray sleds etc… Let us know how the sonnet works out. Kind Regards, Chris
Hi
My friends and I have 4 systems and we use VX1000, VX2000, PD170, Z1U, A1U, and DSR-20. Will the new version be HDV friendly. How about compatability with the Sony XDCAM/HDCAM formats? Any sign of a multicam function?
Thanks!
Just a note. I use a 2.5TB MacGuru 5 bay SATA array on my M100i 8.2.2 – OS10.3.9 – G4 Dual 1.42 1.5gb ram – sonnet x4p pci x sata controller. I can stripe 4 of these 5 bay enclosures together to get HD speed. Whether or not it will work on a G5… – haven’t come to that hurdle yet. Highly recommend MacGuru for their knowledge, customer service and price. Hope this helps. Kind Regards –
There’s a drop down box on the last dialog box that opens when you go to “Build and Burn” which is prompting you to name the build. I think the system will automatically assign to the newest option so use the drop down to select your other drive. I’ll confirm this when I get to the bay. Hope this helps!
Thanks Shane and Jan – Can either of you address the “which mac” can we use on the set and then at the bay. Will the laptops be fast enough? We have jittery playback when looking at the files and it’s concerning the director. (Using Avid Xpress HD and firewire 800 drives) Are there any laptops with fw800 ports? Is that our cause for jitter? We’ve filled and downloaded about 1/2 TB of info in our first 3 days of shooting (2 cams all day) Avid website claims that mac and pc have equal p2 (xmf) capabilities. Thanks again for your input. Kind Regards, Chris K
I’d like to know if the new AJA capture process (not the vincent or p6000) handles the color the same way. Will the colors be as rich as they used to? That was one of the great qualities of the old M100 had over other systems. Just a thought! Chris
