2-5 – you have it right.You’re feeding video signal from the beta deck in and out of the edit comp via the AJA.
The DVCAM deck though you can feed via firewire into the comp.
Run the Beta Deck and the AJA and the comp audio into the mixer.

You need to rip the DVD’s to a .mov file to edit with.

Hardware uprez will always yield superior results over software conversion. Get your self a Aja Kona3 Card or a blackmagic.

Did you transcode the footage?
You don’t want to edit in the AVCHD format. Convert your footage to prores or something else.
