Switching to tapeless is a little unnerving at first. Don’t worry.

Download free software from Panasonic. PSCMS.

Use this to offload cards to the computer. It verifies.

Make 2 copies of it.

These are your master tape reels in a sense.
When the edit is done. Delete the Mov files.
Keep the P2 files forever on hard drives.

Output your HD timeline “current settings”

Drop that file into compressor.

Create an HD version for delivery.
Create an SD version for delivery.

This assumes you do not have an I/O card.

This has come up many times with the FSI monitors. There is a FSI forum here too.

But try the settings on the monitor to fast or normal or something for the audio signal. There is also an “offset” audio setting in FCP.

Running Imac computer audio out will be different then audio and video out an I/O card to proper monitoring of both.

Why not output movie from FCP – current settings. Self contained.
Then open it in QT and export movie to image sequence?

Render it out of AE…

As you’ve read H.264 is an acquisition and delivery format and is not meant to edit with. You need to convert footage first. That’s the way it is,…for now.

DV25 will NOT be Nice and clean and sharp – it is a lower quality codec. Hence the smaller file size. Give em what they want.

Use Compressor.

Export your HD edit “current settings”

Drop that file into compressor. Create a 4X3 Letterbox SD DV25 File.
Turn on frame controls set to best.

Actually backing up your proj. files to the cloud is a great idea.
You don’t have to worry about all the Qt’s so much as you’ll have the EDL’s to reference back to the master reels.

Are all your sources from Tape? Where are the master tapes stored?

Are they card based media?

I’d store one Hard Drive backup on site and one off site.
Once a month take a hard drive to a safety deposit box.

Well, if you output audio mixdown track and re-import – then apply it to your new single track.

Well, the good thing is, now you know.
Don’t edit with MP3 audio files.

You can render all your audio once the edit is locked.
Export an .Aif file of all your audio and bring that back in and lay that in the sequence, line it up, delete the individual audio tracks. This would be good if going out to tape @ some point.

You didn’t mention budget…

But a great hand-held HD camera IMO would be the Panasonic HPX170.
You’ll need to invest in P2 Cards of course.

Going down from there could be the HMC40 & HMC150 on SD cards.
