If you can make the file a little bit smaller b/4 import it might help.
If you change the DPI to 100 from 300 b/4 import it might help. (Some disagree)

If you save the still as a PNG file b/4 import it might help.

Now, another question please;

You know how in PhotoShop or AE or most apps really, you can hold down the shift key (mac) and drag an item, a layer, and it locks it to horizontal or vertical, how do you do this in APP?

Many times I duplicate a layer and drag it across the screen.

But as experienced users are telling you; USB works better on MAC or PC!

Try it and measure the results yourself.
Use the FW port if you want.

You asked for advise on hooking up the 170 to a mac.

Like Steve said, mount the cam via USB cable.
Use P2CMS to transfer the card media to the comp.
