The best route would be to compressed the original media/master to SD mpeg2.
Import into Encore for authoring.

VBR will yield better results for quality.
What mode was the stand alone DVD recorder in when you recorded to that?
Did you dump 4 hours to it? B/c if you just recorded a little bit to it in “SP” mode and then you compress several hours on the computer, ya, it won’t look as good.But, use AME for the compression not Encore.

I think a new iMac will out perform a MBP but the general rule of thumb here is buy the most power you can afford.

If you cannot export it to a stereo track then take it into STP and do it there.

repair permissions.
Relaunch app.
Let all media load b/4 doing anything.
With sequence selected, hit enter to full render.

Seek out the techsmith codec as mentioned – give that a try.

Yes. convert to a standard size and codec that FCP likes to work with.

Don’t worry about the The scratch disks are write protected or unavailable error at bootup. Go into scratch disc settings after launch and it’ll be fine. Some weird bug.
You’d think in 2011 they could get it right…
Is the AE clip a rendered mov file or via dynamic link? If it’s a rendered qt, put in on the externals with the rest of the media.
