sorry for the double post, but i reckon such a situation is worthy of it.
    I’m working in a hdv timeline 🙁
which runs at about 75 minutes long…

i was browsing though to see if anyone had an answer for this problem. same story for me.

the machine is 2 x 3 GHz quad-core intel xeon with 9gb of ram. our 2tb raid is filling up but we have about 200gb free.
the project file is roughly 130mb in size at the moment.
there is a kona lh card in the machine.

so yes, final cut will disappear (crash – with no report) on a regular basis: scrubbing over the timeline, especially over un-rendered segments, or every time when trying to render more than 90seconds of the timeline in one go.
    fairly frustrating stuff.
has there been any progress on solution that doesn’t involve removing components from the computer?

    – oh another note – I’ve been watching the activity monitor lately and when i grab a chunk of 30 seconds or so to render i’ll notice final cut jumps up to using 16.7TB of real memorywhile it render! pretty whacky stuff eh?

    hmm yes,
i re-imported with cropped layers, but as you say it is only slightly more helpful.. i’ll see if there any layers i can lock.
    but yes, a bit fiddly../

    ooh…cropped layers.
aha – yep, i didn’t do that. each layer is taking up the entire comp.
    bugger…
    thanks for your help.
does this mean i have to start my comp again, re-importing the psd as a ‘cropped layers’ comp. or is there a way to get ae to reconfig the file as a ‘cropped layers’ comp within ae without having to restart.

    heh, fair enough.
i’ve just been switching between applications and cross using too much for my own good…

hm, but if we want to watch back an animation to a piece of music and pause it at a particular frame, then it’s hard to achieve smooth real-time playback using scrubbing, even if you have ram previewed. or perhaps there’s another way to scrub apart from just dragging the time indicator through the composition with the mouse…?

yeah, that’s the best work around i’ve been able to come up with too. it’s just an extra bit of fiddling around i thought could be eradicated…but maybe not.

    Hi CowCowBoogie

I tried this the other day, exporting an xml document of a 5.02 project, and importing it into 4.5. However, after selecting the xml doc to import, I was then asked to choose a translation document as well. I had no idea what this was and when i cancelled, FCP reported that there was an error and was unable to open the xml file, any ideas what i could try differently to get this to work?

    Cheers
