Have you tried modulating the image laeft to right a handful of pixels exetremely quickly with motion blur on?

For a more organic effect, use the wiggler to do it. If not, a sin expression may do nicely.

    Yes, and no.

It’s quality is excellent. However it’s Color Correction node isn’t intuitive. If you do purchase Shake, let me know. I built a custom node that simulates the primary functions of a DaVinci in one maser node. Then I created Power Window nodes that are basically my DaVinci node tied to a radial mask.

    Very Powerful.

[Le Coyote] “How can be curves “a joke” for color correction? Every serious color correction package has curves, as they are the most flexible way of balancing colors. But of course, AE’s GUI is very unproductive for color correction.”

Sigh. I said it was a joke for color correcting video. Go to a film transfer session and ask the DaVinci artist to use nothing but the curves and see how many more hours you will be billed instead of using the full toolset. My beef with AE is that it is a VIDEO program and not a still program so to only give us levels, curves, and color balance is a joke. No Primary hue offsets, ranges, kilovectors, power windows, and on and on. A joke.

Can you color correct with curves? Of course. Would you WANT to instead of true tools for color correcting video? I doubt it unless you are a masachist.

Unfortunately AE and even the CC in FCP are not great. AE has old school Photoshop solutions like curves, color balance, etc for correction which is a joke when it comes to coloring video. FCP has the correct controls for color correction, it’s just that the look of it’s color corrector is terrible.

Color Finesse which is free with AE 6.5 is by far the best look and control you’re going to get. However it’s a complete pain to use with AE. I would say your best solution is to get Color Finesse that plugs into FCP.

As far as looks, it’s really something you have to play around with. Deconstruct what you see in Commercials, music videos, and movies that have been through the DI process.

But something that all major color corrections use that CF lacks but CAN be simulated with some work is what DaVinci calls Power Windows. Which are simple feathered shapes that define areas where more layers of color correction can be done in the same image. It is rare that one color correction is applied to the whole image with out more layers adjusting parts of that image.

cool. I’ll take a stab at it since C4D 9.5 now generates normal maps. I’d post it in C4D Cow as well.

  • Or if it’s a component DVD player that instead.

  • 2 tests to do:

    1. Put in a movie and watch the ending credits and see if it suffers from the same thing which it should.

    2. Hook up the DVD player using s-video (which it should be anyways) and see if that solves it.

  • What video signal are you using to get to your monitor? If it’s composite (regular ‘video’ rca jack) than anything with contrast will have rainbow effects because the side effect of combining the color channels. If you are watching it through component or SDI and it’s still doing it, try different font and/or do a small vertical blur on it so that it smoothly crosses over the scan lines.

October 25, 2005 at 4:51 pm in reply to: What are masks, expresions, trakers?

Masks are shapes you can draw with the pen tool or use the elipse and square shapes. Masks are used to confine your alpha (transparency) to specific areas. Masks can be difined to cut out holes or fill in holes in your image. For example if you want a red square, creat a red solid and draw a square mask on it. More advanced uses of masks is isolating moving images. It’s incredibly tedious work, but by animating masks you can isolate a person from an image and treat it separaetly or even move that person to another environment.

Trackers are a tool that allows you to grab a unique point in your image and the tracker will attempt to follow along. It generates position data that can be used on a layer. For example you want to put a sign on the side of a building in a moving shot. You could either try to keyframe it by hand, or have a tracker do the work for you by figuring out how the image moves.

Expressions are basically an equation that allows you to use math and certain functions to perform procederal tasks for you. There are limitless options so it’s hard to explain here. Click on Dan Ebberts head and go to his site to see the best examples of it.
