Will all respect Dan, 9 out of 10 of your questions at the Cow are found in your manual. I’d read it first and know the app itself before posting. If everyone used the Cow as their manual, this forum would clog up with unnecessary questions making it harder to answer questions that need people’s true experience, advice, and ideas.
Solo buttons for example are AE 101. You paid for the manual. Let it guide you with all the answers you could want about the mechanics. Then all of your friends at the Cow will be happy to share techniques on how to IMPLEMENT the AE tools in new and creative ways.

Bryans post brings up a great point. Is the black area from the projector or from the film itself? If it is just from the projector characteristics, then just capture a frame of it without film in it what-so-ever. So you do have damn near a perfect matte. That can use just minor levels to get your full range.

obviously you could use a mask. But if you want something more articulated, I’d create a matte in PS using a brush. You could use a sample frame from your other 8mm footage and draw a greyscale image to match. You could try crushing the levels and what not to your 8mm footage, but you’ll also kill the subtleties with it.
So I’d hand draw a matte (using the other footage to trace over). Then use this matte as a Luma Track matte in AE.

if you mean light rays, then go with Martti’s link. If you mean a glowish burst to the whole image, try duplicating the footage. On the duplicate, blur it to like 10 – 15 pixels. Then use colorama to recolor it to a golden or fiery hugh. Then set this duplicate to ADD transfer mode. Now keyframe this duplicate so the opacity goes from 0 to 100 (then back down if you wish).
