Welcome to the glorious world of the track matte.

Create a layer. Create text using your favorite method. Put this layer above the layer you want to fill the letters with. On the footage layer (which should be the layer under the text. Under your track matte pulldown menu, select track matte alpha. Now it will use the alpha channel of the text to show the footage clip. If it isn’t doing anything than precompose the text layer so it forces it to render first so the layer can see it’s alpha. If this still doesn’t work then there is no alpha with the method you made the text with. In this case use the white letters over black as a matte by selecting ‘track matte luma’ instead.

So basically a track matte borrows the alpha channel from the layer above it, and a luma track matte borrows the actual image (RGB channels) and converts it to greayscale and use that as an alpha.

P.S. Check pg. 731 of the C4D ref manual.

So assuming you already applied the texture to a material and the material to the object: Click on your texture tag next to the object in the object manager. It should default to UVW. Here you can change the mapping type to flat if you wish. Once you like the mapping, in the menus above the tag there should be ‘generate uvw’ or something like that (i’m not near C4D right now). Then the material should stick to the nurb and deform with it.

  • First make sure that your frame rate on your cam is correct. A lot of 8mm was shot at 18fps and not 24fps. But ppl would often still play them on a 24 projector making it play fast (I guess like ppl watch 4:3 tv on a 16:9 screen and stretch the image and don’t seem to care.. grrr).

Anyhoo. I’ve had hit or miss experiences with converting 8mm to the digital domain. In ’94 I shot my first music video on S8mm and projected it on bright white typing paper and shot it with a Sony 300 Betacam. I idn’t need to adjust the shutter, it just worked beautifully without any flicker.

Recently I transferred my parents 8mm to digital domain. At first I called Film Workers here in Dallas to see if they can rent a 8mm gate for the Spirit and have them do true telecin

lol. Maybe i’m closer to the cow server 🙂

I’ll also throw in Motion’s particles. Me personally, I almost always do particles in true 3D. Usually instancing objects.

You’r footage is quite a bit bigget than HD. But HD shouldn’t be too bad to work with. Of course you can always use proxies.

Trapcode Particular or WonderTouch Particle Illusion. Depends on what features you like. As I’m writing this, the ad for PI is on the right of this web page. It may be for you as well.
