Trapcode Particular or WonderTouch Particle Illusion. Depends on what features you like. As I’m writing this, the ad for PI is on the right of this web page. It may be for you as well.

Huh? what do you mean? Which type of software? Plugin or standalone? In which context? What types of particle effects are you looking for? Could be anything from a scientific wind tunnel simulator to pseudo-particle effects created with expressions… You need be more specific. Assuming you are strictly staying within tha AE context, Trapcode’s Particular is the only really viable option at the time being (simply ignoring those preset-typelimted particle systems provided in some plugin suites) and some time this here an AE version of particleIllusion is supposed to come out, but that’s as good as it gets in AE land. For more serious stuff save a little more money and get a 3D program.

lol. Maybe i’m closer to the cow server 🙂

I’ll also throw in Motion’s particles. Me personally, I almost always do particles in true 3D. Usually instancing objects.

    I agree and agree.
Trapcode particular is so versatile that I can’t think of anything elso that comes close.
And the particles are generated in 3d; you can’t ask for more.

Particle Illusion is by far the leader in particle effects creation. It can make ANYTHING you can imagine. From billowing smoke from a bonfire to blood spatters to waterfalls…PI is very, very good.
