Having a hard time understanding your goal. Changing colors or blood oozing look?

Are you saying you want 3D text that changes colors and oozes blood?

A handful of posts down there is a thread on blood dripping from text. 3D text can be done with a plug-in called 3D invigorater or obviously any 3D program.

yeah, works great. Don’t remember the exact parameters, but make it a fuzzy sphere and throw some glow on it. Make the glow colors yellowish and pinkish.

Make the particle gravity very light and make the speed low so they kind of stay where the emitter (or cannon) goes.

Yeah. Create a black and white gradient and keyframe the color points over time to your liking. Obviously you can change the Gradient type as well for some interesting reveals. Also add glow on it. The glow will only trigger off the brighter elements. Cool for motion graphics.

Sounds perfect for the Parent constraint that Maya has. Where you can keyframe the mix between 2 different animations or constraints smoothly. I think Cactus Dan or someone has posted constraint plug-ins they made, one of them being parent.

My other though is create 2 seperate animations and motion blend between them like using characters.

Assign a grad to the alpha and keyframe the grad points to sweep from one side to the other.

Part of the problem is that Combustions tracker is far better than AEs. If you own a copy of Commotion, use that, it has a smokin’ tracker that is very smooth and has easy tools to help you do multiple tracks and average them.

Search the archives for ‘averaging tracks expression’. A few weeks ago a poster posted his expression for averaging AE tracks to get smoother results.

It doesn’t when I do it. As far as I know just like 3D invig, 3D stroke doesn’t truly exist in AE 3D space. It is a 2D layer effect that uses the info from the AE camera to simulate the correct angles and such. But to break it into layers, you need to do it in a 2D approach using layer stacks.

Like John Dickenson’s recent 3D invig tutorial where he uses flat text along with his 3D invig model. However he still creates the flat text in invig so that it is correctly masked along with the invig model.

3D stroke could have changed recently, but the demo I mess with can only simulate depth thru clipping planes.

Which is why I simulated 3D stroke in Maya and C4D (using particle circle sprites) so that I get true 3D.

First, make sure that your 3D stroke is positioned so it has Z depth. Meaning it shouldn’t be almost vertical. It should have some distance from it’s front to back in Z space.

Second, make sure on your top layer (remeber a layer is the whole thing, Solid, mask, 3D stroke effect) that you are changing the ‘z clip BACK parameter’ so that it only leaves the front of your stroke.

So in my example the layer that sits on top of the characters head will maybe have parameters of:

    Z clip front = 0
Z clip back = 1200 (if let’s say a value of 1200 chopped your layer’s depth in half).

This would then only leave the front half of the stroke visible (from 0 to it’s halfway point 1200)

Then Duplicate the entire layer that 3D stroke is on (not the effect whithin a layer). So that you have another AE layer (including the solid and 3D stroke effect applied to it)

Put this Duplicate layer below our earthlink head layer.

In that go into the 3D stroke effect and you would change the parameters to this:

    Z clip front = 1200
Z clip back = 30000 (or whatever the highest number is)

That way it will chop off the front of the stroke.

Remeber that 1200 here is an arbitrary number I picked. You have to adjust the numbers till your stroke is getting chopped off half way through it’s depth.
